Something I’ve been struggling with for the last six years is reality conflicting with my well-intentioned belief that most people want to do good. I think I’m close to reconciling it with a new idea that says most people want themselves to do well, and hope the community doing well is a byproduct.

We have failed the youths.
I feel like people focus a little too much on Bruce Springsteen having a slightly cringey stage persona singing boomer music and not enough on that boomer music being pretty fuckin good and him genuinely caring about stuff
this is why they should've made them all jarvis, so you'd only talk like that to posh brits
but yeah, there's a reason they're default-female and it ain't star trek
An aerial view of a river crossed by a causeway. There are yellow construction barriers on either side of the causeway, and construction equipment is beginning to create an opening between the causeway and the shoreline.
A heatmap showing the flow of water in the Yakima River where it met the Columbia River, before the causeway was removed. The water in the Columbia River is cool (blue) but the water flowing down the Yakima hits a barrier at the causeway on one side of Bateman Island (circled on the map), so the water is trapped and rerouted around the other side of the island. The water on the causeway side is hot (red); there is a thin flow of warm (yellow) water flowing above the island into the Columbia River.
Several gray dead sockeye salmon are visible floating in the river near underwater grasses.
Every summer, salmon and steelhead swim hundreds of miles from the Pacific Ocean toward their spawning grounds. But fish swimming toward the Yakima River in Central Washington often hit a wall of heat they can’t penetrate.
My latest for @sciam.bsky.social is all about the real biology, ecology, and climate science that is used to create the world of Pokémon, and how scientists use it to teach science in the real world.
This is just about the most fun I’ve ever had interviewing anyone, and I hope you enjoy! 🧪🌎

A friendly reminder that we don't have to accept the way things are.
We really can make the world better.
Orban's inability to prevent last year's Pride protests—attended by 300k despite being banned—was a turning point in his authoritarian grip of the country.
Queer people are always leading the fight against authoritarianism, as we are often its first targets. Never cower to fear.
The image is an original poem titled "A CARILLION AT WINTER'S EGRESS" I rise to the carillon of cardinal song and windchime bells. Into my egress window drift sunbeams and vernal smells. Sighing tulips, Eastern redbuds pierce a yard still damp and dewed while a caller at my window swanks and struts, vermillion-hued. He bows his crest in genteel greeting– I curtsy back good sabbath morn, and then, anon, his bright wings beating, he flits off to fields of husk and corn. LIZ RENNER | 04/12/026
Photo of a red bird, a male Northern Cardinal, perched on the ledge of a basement egress window. Inside the window in the foreground, a blue Bianchi Brava road bike is parked.
Map of watershed basins in the Western United States. Basins are color-coded to show SNOTEL estimates of snow-water equivalency compared to the median from 1991-2020 as of April 8 2026. Nearly all the colors are red (<50%; Covering AZ, NM, CO, NZ, Northern CA, WA, and most of WY)), with some orange (50-69%) and yellow (70-89%). in the Northern regions (Montana, Idaho, and parts of Washington)
It's going to be a wild summer.
The more I think about the 70,000 ICE incarcerated without due process the more I think we are underreacting. People are literally trapped inside for profit prisons. We need to do something.
Boston Globe mock front page from April 9, 2016. Date says April 9, 2017, with giant headline “DEPORTATIONS TO BEGIN” and “Markets sink as trade war looms.”
Ten years ago today, in April 2016, the Boston Globe printed a satirical front page imagining a future Trump administration. The page was called "alarmist," "hyperbolic," "dystopian." But we’ve put up with so much since then it now looks like . . . a slow Thursday?
BREAKING: Following the American threat of an “Avignon Papacy,” Robert Kennedy has begun a Diet of Worms
It’s hard to overstate how much of this moment is driven by people who got a taste of accountability and were very, very mad about it.

DOGE team is going to lose its mind when they find out what we spent 25 billion on over the last month. Waste. Fraud. Abuse. Everywhere.

The milky way over lake superior, i believe this was about 12 different frames and there's a ton of light pollution but it kind of adds to the picture. The foreground was taken the next day and darkened , the water I digitally added the reflection to.
In honor of Michigan clinching the NCAA here's my multi year goal to capture the full milky way arch over a body of water, taken last July over Lake Superior from a state park in Michigan. 🗺️
A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.
It's be a tale of two countries as far as season-to-date snowfall goes (through March). In the Contiguous U.S., the season-to-date snowfall is in last place since 1940-41. In Canada, the season-to-date snowfall is in first place since 1940-41. Which team would you rather be on?
Christina Koch’s facial profile backlit by Earth in the background, through the spacecraft window
So, to sum up, a couple of days ago Christina Koch became the first woman to see Earth in its entirety, and today – right now, in fact – she is the first woman to see the Moon up close, and the first woman to see the far side. 🥹
The biggest story in the world right now is that the president of the United States is a demented old man who takes pleasure in torturing and killing people and is committing crimes with impunity. And yet most legacy media outlets are too cowardly to tell it like it is.
Anti-ICE poster spotted in San Diego, California
this post is about the democratic party
one sign of a healthy functioning well ordered society is US senators posting "someone should do something about this" on social media in response to the US government committing several dozen crimes against humanity on a daily basis
