I suspect it's partially because the details about a character tells us a lot about that character—and I'm not sure what being obsessed with the Brontes says about a person.

Plenty of histrom folks reading "the latest by Miss Austen" or Pamela or a made up gothic romance.

Series Review: Morelli Family by Leighton Greene (2020-2022) Heat Factor: Essential and explicit Character Chemistry: The darkness in me loves the darkness in you, but I also see your light Plot: The members of the Morelli family have to stay alive (and out of jail) through a coup, attacks from rival families, an FBI sting, and more! Overall: Is it healthy? Probably not, but this is one excellent series if you really want to hit all those mafia romance beats.

Review: The Legacy Series by Melissa Roehrich (2023 – 2025) Heat Factor: Pretty high heat, but it's a bit of a slower burn in the first book. Character Chemistry: In the beginning it feels like there’s zero chemistry and it’s really challenging to lock in, but it pulls through in the end. Plot: Tessa is unexpectedly chosen as the Source for the Arius Kingdom Heir and it’s very much against her will.

To enjoy, you must be ok with a heroine who is an uncontrollable hot mess. You must also be ok with a throuple situation.
