Right now, unfolding around us on a global scale, is a rich and unambiguous lesson on the dangers of fossil fuel dependence. The most obvious solution is for the affected countries to reduce their dependence through clean energy.
Are you seeing that message in media?
my favorite article of the year
March 5, 2026 The Honorable Kathy Hochul Governor of New York State NY State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224 Re: Upholding New York’s Leadership in the Fight Against Climate Change Dear Governor Hochul, At a time when the Trump Administration is doing everything possible to tear down decades of progress in the fight against climate change, it is incumbent on states like New York to reject this new wave of climate denial and put forward bold policies that will save New Yorkers money, reduce pollution, and protect a livable climate for our constituents and our children and grandchildren. That is why we, the undersigned senators, categorically oppose any effort to rollback New York’s nation-leading climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and urge you to stand strong in the face of misinformation that seeks to blame the CLCPA for the energy affordability crisis that fossil fuels have created. Climate change remains one of the greatest threats that our constituents - and societies across the globe - have ever faced. New Yorkers are already living through extreme weather events that run the gamut from searing heat waves to Arctic cold snaps, and they are already paying the price1, with their dollars, their homes, their health, and even their lives. The climate crisis is driving up the cost of home insurance, of health care, of groceries, and of countless other daily necessities2, and every delay in taking action will only drive those costs even higher. Confronting this crisis is a generational task and a legacy issue for every elected official, and it is inseparable from any credible effort to address the high cost of living. At the same time, there is no question that we must address energy affordability, capacity, and reliability. But while President Trump and the fossil fuel industry want New Yorkers to believe that we must choose between those needs and climate action, nothing could be further from the truth. The recent three-page memo from…
not include any price guardrails, with a completely unrealistic carbon price34. As such, the analysis simply cannot be treated as a serious contribution to the debate. In reality, rolling back the CLCPA will not save our constituents money because it is not the cause of increasing costs. It is the fossil fuel status quo56 that has created the affordability crisis New Yorkers are now suffering from, and it is bold action to deliver renewable energy and energy efficiency that will give them relief, saving money for individuals in the immediate-term and for all utility customers in the medium- and long-term7. When it comes to energy generation capacity, renewables can be deployed cheaply and quickly to meet our needs8. And over the last year, through heat waves and polar vortexes9, renewables have proven that they add much-needed reliability10 to the grid, reducing price spikes in the process, like those driven by wars in Europe and the Middle East. Between us we carry significant legislation on a broad number of policies large and small that will reduce New Yorkers’ costs and move us toward our science-based climate targets. We stand ready to work with you and your administration to implement comprehensive climate policies that truly meet the needs of this moment – but we cannot support abandoning our commitment to climate progress. 👀 New letter from 29 NYS Senators (>2/3 of the Dem caucus) to Hochul this morning:
“We categorically oppose any effort to rollback New York’s nation-leading climate law… and urge you to stand strong in the face of misinformation that seeks to blame the CLCPA for the energy affordability crisis”
I usually avoid sharing what feels like "inside baseball" political analysis here, but this merits an exception because of the stakes + scale involved.
Zohran isn't "wrong" to endorse Hochul; he has no choice. But for primary voters to back Hochul would definitely be unwise. Let me explain why. 🧵
Last time we checked, a climate leader doesn't:
- Violate NY's climate law
- Indefinitely delay a pollution cap program
- Drag her feet on public renewables
- Fast-track fossil fuel pipelines
- Green-light energy bill rate hikes

To fuel AI, Big Tech is now partnering with Big Oil and pipeline companies to supply fossil fuels directly to their data centers.

Crazy stuff today from @ariellesamuel.bsky.social:

Couldn't agree more with this article.
Democrats completely surrendered the narrative around immigration and the climate justice movement can't continue to do the same. If there is one issue where there needs to be more intersectionality right now, this is it.

We all need to become eco-populists. That means championing policies that significantly lower daily costs while lowering emissions. Heat Pumps for All, alongside much more robust tenant rights; free and better public transit; price caps on green energy; make polluters pay for the transition.

I’m not leaving until the end of the year, but the job posting to replace me just went live last night! See below for our newly created Deputy Director position.
NY Renews is a force to be reckoned with and we’re at a pivotal moment. I would love to chat with anyone about it:
lnkd.in/ekAFtZww
There are so many chapters and moments that will shape me forever:
Staying up late to watch the NY’s Climate Law pass, co-designing and winning the campaign for the Climate Action Fund as Campaigns Coordinator and then Campaigns Director, and so many more
So when I found out there was a multi-racial, cross-class coalition organizing exactly at this intersection, I fell in love and worked as hard as I could to find my way to NY Renews.
Now, after 5 years with NY Renews, it’s time to say goodbye.
Some 🌱 personal news 🌱
When I graduated from college, working at NY Renews was my dream job.
I was obsessed with the intersection of the environmental justice movement and the climate movement– its history, its struggles, and its potential. But examples of successes were few and far in between.
Sometimes it can be hard to tell who is ready for the next level of leadership development.
This week, it's been really clear.
There will be so much defense work to be done but we can't forget that this is also a moment where we have the opportunity to move people in their leadership in a BIG way.
A very wise woman helped me understand that many of us have been trying to *prevent* the dark times, but we can’t because we have already been in the dark times for quite a while.
Our job now is to *shorten* the dark times and lay the groundwork for what world we want to exist AFTER.
Sweet! Will check it out Mike. Good to see you here as well!
Well, well, well, a functioning internet space.
So my people, what is the best thing you've read or listened to since the election?
another curmudgeonly thread for the many of you who will be entering organizing spaces.
all other things being equal, when confronted with one team of people recruiting you to Be a Thing and another team recruiting you to Do a Thing, please give serious thought to joining the second.
