We CAN question - even potentially condemn - the way a piece of media handles any given subject, but we should never silence art on the simple basis of its subject matter itself.
Shame on @baftagames.bsky.social
Apologies to @silverscriptgames.bsky.social
It took decades for games to be taken seriously as art.
Well, art is sometimes uncomfortable when used as a form of personal expression.
You can't have one without the other.
You can't pretend to appreciate games as a medium that can say something & turn away at the slightest discomfort.
There're folks who believe media should only ever be pure feel-good entertainment. That any depiction of bad events or uncomfortable themes should be proscribed.
However, art has always been a way for people - artists & consumers - to process and convey fears, anxieties, traumas and much more.
The duality of DbD
People going crazy cause the end of Stranger Things is bad. Brother this show's been garbage since season 2 ended 😅
AAA studios with billon-dollar flops when they look at indie success stories
Could you rephrase this as if you were Nicolas Cage?
I know how it happened. Market control, shareholder supremacy and enshittification, but I'm curious about the inflection point.
Yeah but Microsoft & co have always sold digital products, yet they seem increasingly bent on forcing us to use garbage rather than sell us stuff we actually want/need, which is how the market is supposed to work.
I do like bacon and orange juice tho
That's the thing though. Trying to sell me shit through marketing is one thing. I might try it and if I don't like it I'll leave it. But forcing me to use it is another thing entirely. It's like if they smashed your door in in the morning to force-feed you orange juice and then charged you for it.
Has someone pinpointed when exactly companies like Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, etc stopped selling us things we want and started force-feeding us shit we don't want?
Probably an @edzitron.com question.
The fact that they released this as marketing for their garbage... Holy shit Jensen.
Hey kids, can you find the sharpness & exposure sliders on Photoshop? Crank that shit up and make a billion dollars!
When I try to "fix" art with my slop engine:
Art direction? Intentional lighting? What's that?
Hell yeah brother
Amen!
Look, I don't *want* to be mean, but I feel like making a generic high-budget live-service game in an over-saturated market already litered with the corpses of high-profile failures when you don't have enough funds to sustain it for even a month post-release might not be a great idea 🤷♂️
I feel like a $20 game with this kind of placeholder art in it with 500k+ concurrent players and overwhelmingly positive reviews should be some kind of lesson for the industry, but I suppose they'll keep telling us it's getting too expensive to make games these days.
Can we start measuring live-service lifespans in Concord units?
Highguard lasted 3 Concords.
