Amanda Smith @AmandaSmithSays Thinking again about how the names Arctic and Antarctica just means "bears" and "no bears." reluctantbroodingdads So as an Antarctic expert I need to add to this that we had not in fact been to Antarctica when it was named. The ancient Greeks decided that because there was an Arctic at the top of the world, with bears, there had to be an opposite at the other end, without bears. Which is kind of ridiculous except that the f🌫️ckers were dead on

Thing is, this polling technique is actually a really effective way to get good, objective data. Unfortunately, it's an absolutely terrible way to get a top ten chart worth anybody reading, because everything interesting just gets smeared out in favour of whatever has the broadest appeal that week
I mean this is just what happens when you do a poll, right? Especially in this format — they didn't ask "what is the best game ever" and count votes, they show voters two games and ask which is better. There must be thousands of games in the pool, so of course the top ten are all basically the same
Imagine the fun the designers could have inventing whatever the equivalent of regency dress is on Romulus or whatever

Through it all, we Hammers had one reply, one comeback, that ended all discussion. “The Double?” we’d say, smiling benignly. “That must have been nice. But have you ever won the World Cup?” Because we did, you know, and no one can take it away from us. West Ham, my club, won the World Cup in 1966. Is the plan to hold these people until after the London council elections?
look, if you don't want to see random pivots to the right…
I think this is right — websites are accessible by default, the only reason we think this is hard is because the industry standard is to invent the entire field of UX/UI from scratch every time we start a new project. Native apps almost never bother with (eg) custom dropdowns and nobody complains

Well wishes your way, of course, and if folks have nothing better to do with their own long weekends, they can pop round mine at noon for a #CrypticSunday Replacement Stream Service feat. @andrewt.net, Ozpiper, Baz and maybe a puzzle from yesterday if I have the time:

I always forgive Git a lot of its bullshit on account of how it's one of those programs originally created in the 70s that are just half a century of cruft layered on top of outdated UI conventions that they were still making up as they went.
Which is a problem, because Git came out in 2005

And maybe you disagree. Sure. I don't get it, but to each their own.
But why post about it? Why go out of your way to publicly belittle someone trying to lay out the case against her transphobia, instead of just ignoring it? How is that helping anyone but the transphobes?
