The problem when I graduated was that there were 200 modern British history PhDs putting in applications for every job, you had to apply for like 50 jobs to get one, and a fair few people left academia before they did. That was unpleasant in its own way, but it wasn’t a death spiral like it is now.

No politician, no academic, no movement organizer, no comedian-there is no role that the person is so irreplaceable that we must overlook sexual assault. Every one of them is replaceable. Good fucking riddance.

I read it for my medieval history course in undergrad and the professor (who I love) basically said "Read this for the vibes, not the facts. Everything in this is a fever dream."

It’s Thursday morning and my shoulders ache
Eyes plagued with the needle-sharp pricks of unshed
tears, tears I can't very well shed
on a bus
going over a bridge
My homeland still has bridges — am I relieved?

It’s Thursday morning and my world hasn’t ended (yet)
and they massacred three hundred people in Lebanon
and my beloveds in Palestine are still starving
and Iran’s air is still poisoned,
her schools are still rubble,
and my aunt in Tehran is still alive, I think
(there’s still a blackout, so who knows)
Am I relieved?

It’s Thursday morning and we won, or something,
or we paused, or something,
and a white woman in my comments
is saying “Nobel Peace Prize for Iran”
and my people are still
being shot in the streets
but at least they aren’t being bombed.

Am I relieved?

It’s Thursday morning and a girl asks
It’s Thursday morning and a girl asks
if I know where Home Depot is
and I can tell she’s Iranian because of her eyebrows
and the concealer layered
beneath her sunken eyes.
(We all aged 24 years in 24 hours
based on a fucking tweet.
but hey, the videos are funny, right?)

And I want to ask her — are we lucky?
Can my shoulders drop?
Is this what luck looks like?

It’s Thursday morning
and I want to scream
because in this stupid, cruel world
I think it is.
I think I’m lucky.
I think I’m blessed.
Shukranalhamdullilah,
they only killed a few thousand of us (for now.)
What a mercy.
What a goddamn relief

You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

As a Jewish historian who works at a university, I think it’s great that an administration committed to destroying “the internal globalist enemy” which is staffed by groyper antisemites is collecting lists of Jews. Can’t see any potential downside here at all.

a man in a suit and tie says " don 't ever take sides with anyone against the family again ever " ALT: a man in a suit and tie says " don 't ever take sides with anyone against the family again ever "

To me the whole thing could be fixed by having inside the house and outside the house conversations. Why are we letting the right see our discord at all?

Status Scoop | ProPublica's Walkout Warning: The possibility of ProPublica staffers walking off the job just got far more serious. Unionized staffers at the nonprofit newsroom voted overwhelmingly this week to authorize a strike, Natalie Korach has learned. The ProPublica Guild represents about 150 journalists, videographers, and other newsroom employees. A major sticking point in the negotiations with management has centered on the use of artificial intelligence in reporting, with the union demanding protections from having jobs replaced by the rapidly advancing technology. “We are ready to walk off the job to show management that their refusal to agree to basic protections will not be tolerated and that we will not accept anything less than a fair contract,” said Agnel Philip, unit chair of ProPublica Guild.

A pair of New York bills would ban surveillance pricing at grocery stores and other retailers.

One bill could ban the use of algorithms and personal data to set prices.

The other would stop grocery stores from using digital price tags that constantly change.

I can’t laugh or meme these people because they made USAID cuts that are currently killing dozens of people - almost a hundred - every single day. Every single day. And I despair of and despise the self-centredness that continues to create this cruelty.

'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.

AI is not magic. It's human labor.

The opening anecdote in this story made my jaw fall on the floor.

ICE has a playbook for buying warehouse detention centers: move fast, tell nobody, and let communities find out from property records or news leaks. It's happened in at least 20 towns across the country. A thread. 🧵
