She was acting because she wanted to. Her parents supported that decision, and so fostered her pursuits. Later she fell in love and started a family, and they got priority; a very good reason for the rest of the world's loss.
Wyman is good in this - better than the posters, for sure. Not pictured in any of these is Alistair Sim, who really ties the room together. We also get to see the much deprived from Hollywood Pat Hitchcock, who's great in a small role here, and would later be wonderful in Strangers on a Train.
