That said, some of the language (in particular, the widespread racism) hasn’t aged well, so it is very much a novel of its time.

I think readers are intelligent enough to contextualize a novel in terms of when it was written, but I still feel a responsibility to point out that I’m not blind to it.

Just started “Cogan’s Trade” by George V. Higgins (which became “Killing Them Softly” in theaters).

Some of the grittiest and most well-written dialogue this side of Elmore Leonard. I’ve never seen an author characterize people so well through their words.
