About 8 in 10 Americans who re-enrolled in Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage say their health care costs are higher this year, including about half who say their costs are "a lot" higher, according to a survey from the health care research nonprofit KFF.

Keep your parka handy - and your shorts. Cover your tender plants tonight and be ready to break out the popsicles Thursday.
Just saw this piece by @jpflores.rbind.io on a brief trip to X.
It’s 100% spot on, and why I devote a lot of time speaking to classes and workshops for U-M grad students, residents & health services research fellows & faculty. (On top of writing/media relations) sciencepolitics.org/2026/03/18/w...
My article in the Financial Times about my book. It includes a wonderful randomised trial of beer glasses (which you might unknowingly have been part of if you bought a pint in some British pubs c.1998)

To my University of Michigan med colleagues who use their work email addresses to subscribe to anything, including professional society memberships, work-related news outlets, work-related travel rewards programs, etc: Do not ignore these End User Digest messages! You must tell it what to allow.
I know, I know, I know that the academic medical center I work for needs to protect itself against cyberattacks.
I just wish there was a better way to do it than holding up emails from news outlets & orgs whose news I signed up for, & making me go through my 'end user digest' to allow them through.
If you think legislation that targets “low enrollment degrees” only impacts the humanities please look at this list. Degrees in chemistry, math, physics, political science, data analytics, psychology and economics are being eliminated. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/04/16/o...

(Sorry that last post was a paraphrase of @aaronecarroll.bsky.social but I agree 100% and hope he saw me pumping my fist in agreement from the back of the room…)
Researchers who study health care need to talk to policymakers and the media more, and base those conversations in what their work means for patients. Talk about why it matters, and why more research is needed to achieve solutions.
Another key message for communicating health services research: talk about the tradeoffs, take questions, talk about potential solutions
Music to my ears: biggest issue in science communication is lack of trust in the messenger - corrective information without trust hardens people against you. Focus on building trust by listening, showing empathy, asking open ended questions and engage locally and with people who disagree with you.
Not sure why the tagging didn’t work but @aaronecarroll.bsky.social of @academyhealth.bsky.social made some great points in his talk about the need to communicate how health services research addresses the stuff that Americans are angriest about in healthcare, especially cost and access.
Dr Aaron Carroll of AcademyHealth speaking to Dr John Ayanian at the University of Michigan
So good to have @aaronecarroll.bsky.social at @umich.edu today to speak to the largest health services research community in the country about what the organization he leads, @academyhealth.bsky.social, is doing to defend research funding, federal health data, entities like AHRQ & USPSTF & more.

"There are quite a few risks to human health—physical and mental health—from flooding. These include drowning, electrocution and infections from contact with the flood waters." Carina Gronlund, Research Associate Professor, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research

Absolutely heartwrenching news
Still in awe of what we pulled off tonight: an amateur orchestra and choir, with three student soloists and two student conductors, + a volunteer board handling logistics, doing Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius and Britten’s American Overture at the University of Michigan: www.youtube.com/live/rSrI3yF...
“We hope that it can encourage people to go into these SUD treatment fields, knowing that there are programs that could help them after they graduate.”

There will be a live stream! But if you possibly can, please come in person. After all, how often do you get to see 240 musicians and singers on one stage?
Tuesday night in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan Life Sciences Orchesta will join forces with the UMS Choral Union & 3 U-M vocal soloists (including the chair of the voice department!) to present Elgar's Dream of Gerontius.
This video gives a glimpse.
