The first basic income proposals in the 1790s grew out of resistance to enclosure, were inspired by reports of Indigenous American resource distribution, and can tell us a lot about the mind-boggling theft behind AI
My piece today in The Conversation:

Just published this month's @itsafoundation.bsky.social newsletter. You'll find 7 links to read about recent basic income news you may have missed in the past month, and also a bonus highlight article and the latest about @comingle.bsky.social as it builds and tests a real weekly basic income floor.
Critics of Universal Basic Income always ask, "How do we pay for it?" But they never ask, "What is the cost of NOT doing it?" The cost of homelessness, food insecurity, poor health outcomes, crime, and lost human potential is a tax we are all paying every single day. That cost is in the TRILLIONS.
Universal Basic Income is economic security in an age of AI and high instability. Technological and economic change creates concentrated gains and widely shared risks. UBI is the mechanism that returns part of those gains to everyone and protects everyone from the downside risks. It's a stabilizer.
Imagine a world where "I can't afford to leave" is no longer a reason to stay in an abusive relationship or a soul-crushing job. That is the true power of Universal Basic Income. It’s not just economic policy; it’s personal liberation.
You deserve better. We all do.
A radical thing about Universal Basic Income is the message it sends: "You have inherent worth simply because you exist." In a society that equates human worth with productivity, that is a revolutionary shift in our collective psychology. UBI is all of us saying to each other, "You deserve to live."
Why do we treat the economy like it’s a force of nature that just happens to us? It’s a system we designed. If it’s not working for the majority of people, we shouldn’t be asking how to fix the people—we should be redesigning the system. Any proper redesign needs to include universal basic income.
Come see me and @karlwiderquist.bsky.social in person at the Village Underground on March 18th in NYC, or via stream. We're going to debate Andy Mills and Alex Kantrowitz about AI and UBI. Our discussion will be hosted by @2waytvapp.bsky.social and moderated by Michael Moynihan.

Online discussions about UBI are filled with many doubting people's ability to spend the money "correctly."
What if most people are like you and would seize the opportunity to make positive change in your life?
What if most people are good?
it's pretty depressing how the solution to stuff like the pandemic completely changing society for the worse and now AI changing society for the worse would be "universal basic income" and then we just don't ever do that
Universal Basic Income
Post by Ken Yang: Chart shows corporate profits rising since 1980 while labor compensation share declines.
The only real answer is UBI as a dividend to citizens as shareholders
Peter Diamandis shared a conversation with Yang, suggesting society may have a 1–3 year window where UBI could act as a bridge during rapid AI disruption, while Scott Santens’ advocacy continues to amplify public debate on unconditional cash policies. zurl.co/WPAh1
When people say UBI won’t work because people won’t be incentivized to work I call BS.
I’ve worked in museums for 36 years, and I love what I do so much that for 35 of those years, I’ve also been volunteering at other museums to do it for free.
The whole AI debate around jobs and UBI is fascinating. I keep thinking - what if we focused less on replacing work and more on freeing people to do work they actually love? What would you do with your time if money wasn't a concern?
the widespread adoption of genAI has just made me want UBI more. I don’t think we get original, human-made art and writing unless people have time, security, and stability
UBI is a public health imperative. No one should ever worry their life will fall apart unless they go to work sick.
Excellent article in @thepointau.bsky.social by @squigglyrick.bsky.social
"What if we just gave people money? The economics of time and freedom"

"The basic income was life-changing. Only months into the scheme, I found out I was pregnant. The basic income helped me decide to have my baby, knowing I could continue creative work and keep my small studio space... The basic income gave me more freedom to experiment in my work."
DO UBI FOR ALL.
Think about the mental bandwidth tax of daily survival. When we're constantly worried about survival, our ability to think long-term, innovate, or care for our communities is crushed. Universal Basic Income isn't just cash; it's the cognitive freedom to actually participate in society and democracy.
If you think of universal basic income as just "more money," you aren't understanding it and what makes it so different and effective. The fact it comes at a regular frequency is a key factor. When you know that whatever happens next month, you can still buy food, that's a huge deal.
It's STABILITY
Stay up to date on Universal Basic Income developments with our monthly newsletter! Here's the top 7 things for you to know that happened in January as curated by @scottsantens.com:
Universal Basic Income is a floor. It's a foundation. By providing EVERYONE some amount of money EVERY month as a RIGHT, it enables everyone to then choose whatever work they feel fits them best—paid or unpaid—and empowers everyone with the freedom to say NO until their conditions to say YES are met
If you want to help make universal basic income a reality, besides supporting our work, you can simply make a point of engaging with UBI content more. Make a point of doing more liking, reposting, and sharing. Better yet, have real conversations with those around you.
Help bang the drum. 🥁
"It's a foundation" is one of the simplest ways of succinctly describing universal basic income, which is why we chose the name Income To Support All Foundation to pursue our mission of economic freedom for all via UBI.
