Nice piece here by @danielkopp.bsky.social in @jacobinmag.bsky.social on the Belgian labour movement's impressive efforts to block the gov's austerity program.
Massive three-day strike starting today organized by the country's unions.

I remember reading this in my English Literature class in high-school and it stayed with me ever since. I always think of it when I hear glorified militaristic rhetoric. I don't know how one can read this poem and not reject militarism for the rest of their life.
โNow is not the time to sanction Israel,โ an EU diplomat said.
Tell that to those mourning, starving, maimed, living under occupation and apartheid.
Sanctions, suspension of EU-Israel deal must be squarely on the table - and leave it only once adopted.

๐จ The EU is trying to quietly weaken nature laws during summer break. We have 4 days left to stop this. Don't let them destroy our rivers, forests & wildlife in silence. Don't let them scrap the rules that are there to protect us and our children #HandsOffNature handsoffnature.eu?utm=.share.b...
Imagine having "zionist" in your bio โ will come in handy when the trial finally takes place.
God bless you my friend, I've donated and reposted. Hope you and your family stay safe.

Lol, we need the "AI" that is killing the environment and guzzling untold amounts of resources to save the environment. This is 1984 type of marketing, like "ministry of peace" that is actually the war department.
Commendable, but both the Netherlands and Ireland are the biggest investment / trade partners of Israel in the EU, so they could take at least partial unilateral action by stopping their import and divesting, which they haven't so far.
We are receiving desperate messages of starvation from #Gaza, including from our colleagues.
Food prices have increased 40 fold.
UNRWA has enough food for the entire population for over three months, stockpiled just outside Gaza.
Lift the siege and let aid in safely and at scale.
Group of Palestinian persons, mostly children, holding cardboard signs asking for help. WeMove Europe's logo is included in the top right corner Caption: nO eu BUSINESS WITH WAR CRIMINALS. Support the petition.
Urgent action! ๐จ
Children in Gaza are starving. Not by accidentโIsraelโs government is deliberately starving the population. And the EU keeps doing trade as usual. ๐
Tell the EU: suspend the trade deal with Israel, stop arms exports, & sanction perpetrators. ๐

Proud of Brussels yesterday โ we showed that Belgian and European citizens #StandWithGaza ๐ต๐ธ now up to the EU to listen.
Any word that props up this warmongering agenda contributes to the violence we're seeing, starting from #Gaza.
Unfortunately, the EU's main narrative today feels more like a net contributor than ever. I wish we would resist and call out this senseless escalation instead of playing into it.
The bottom line, as the article puts is: reckless militarism "is only likely to lead to further violence, with climate change itself now increasingly seen as a driver of conflict".
It's clear to me that militaristic / securitarian rhetoric is the very antithesis to human rights and climate justice.
Every โฌ spent on military steals climate resources, like already done by ๐บ๐ธ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ง๐ช๐ฎ๐น โ alongside healthcare, education & social security.
Cutting aid condemns people relying on those provisions to either die or migrate.
But then govts cut migration routes and call for deportations, because "security".
Enter the climate breakdown:
Military is already responsible for 5.5% of global emissions (very conservative estimation).
Rearmament planned by *Nato alone* could increase emissions by almost 200m tonnes a year.
Each GDP % devoted to military could lead to up to 2% increase in national emissions.
Another sanitising term used in tech is "dual use", conveniently glossing over military's primary use: kill (or harm).
Any arms race in history has brought countries either to the brink of war or open conflict.
The consequence is always a loss of security โ food, health, livelihoods wiped out.
The piece exposes the madness of the arms race we're witnessing.
In 2023, military spending was a record $2.46tn.
In March, @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu unveiled #ReArmEurope, an ugly name reminiscing of pre-World War propaganda, proposing โฌ800bn for military or, as the narrative goes, "security".
This article by @damiengayle.bsky.social hits even harder as we scroll past the images of a genocide broadcast live.
The lead: "Defence spending boosts across world will worsen climate crisis which in turn will cause more conflict".
It is as simple as that.

This is so unspeakably vile. I suspected the U-turn was to counter criticism of his reactionary messages but it's so unbelievably cynical to do so on the skin of bombed children.
Fascinating @benthompson vision of the future of the Internetโi.e., "The Agentic Web" Scenario: Before I go to sleep, I tell ChatGPT โPlan my 5-year-oldโs birthday next Saturday, budget $500. When you've made the reservation, email these 20 ppl a printable invitation to attend. Also my wife wants to go to England in mid-July. Find 5 plausible flights for the family and make several distinct itineraries. Finally, pls edit this work memo." When I go to sleep, the AI agent negotiates slots with two bowling alleys, buys a cake, emails printable invites, plans the trip, copy-edits, etc.
Wouldn't do this in a million years

So it goes.
