If you’re looking for an unusual read and haven’t read anything by Katy Wimhurst then this is a great start. Each short story is like putting on a VR headset. She has a knack of transporting the reader with just a few lines, creating very real characters but in surreal situations. #Booksky

JUNE 15th - A Short Dark Comedy A short film starring Michael Spicer & Lucia Keskin

At a time when middle of the road vanilla is the only flavour entertained by large media corporations, genuine talent struggles to break through. So if you're able, this short dark comedy from @michaelspicer.bsky.social is deserving of your backing:

a man in a white shirt and tie is saying i am calm ALT: a man in a white shirt and tie is saying i am calm

Trying to write something catchy to big up my new sci-fi novel but a Waterstones advert for another celebrity children’s book appeared in my feed and I decided to throw a table out the window instead. #Booksky

The first page of the story The Corner Shop by C. L. Ray. It is a page of black text on a white background. The paper is slightly mottled and faded which is typical of antique books such as this.

“Yes, I remember when that photograph was taken. It was just before he got religion.” The girl spoke as though she regarded “religion” as a regrettable indisposition.

You’re very welcome. Do you think we’ll be seeing a third series?

Folks, if you haven’t listened to Michael Spicer’s “No Room” on BBC Sounds then do give it a whirl. Funny, original satire.

If you love books you should support small presses:

“Indies are more likely to take a risk on a debut author, an experimental manuscript, or more thoughtful or difficult subjects. There are so many gems that deserve a wider audience than they achieve” - Peter Buck, Elsewhen Press

I agree, but let’s not forget that plastic carrier bags could be made redundant in the click of a finger if PEOPLE STOPPED USING THEM.

Yeah, I read that in his letters but he contradicts himself (and not just over the towers). Hence, I find referring to the text the best source (and it sums up the wider conflict). Rushed to think up a title I reckon he forgot he wrote this paragraph 😂

Yes, it’s still on Sounds. Very funny.
“The Pin” is also good light hearted wit, and of course Michael Spicer’s “No Room” is brilliant.

Have you listened to Tom Basden’s “Party”?

I was listening to that this morning. Onto Cabin Pressure now.

True in every aspect of life.

“I sometimes think I might have made a writer if only I could have resisted adjectives. Adjectives have been my downfall. I wake with a headache, swearing that I won’t touch a drop of adjective again.”

Boromir from THE LORD OF THE RINGS, holding The One Ring. He thought he could use it for good, but everything done with the ring turns to evil. He was one of the mightiest warriors of middle earth, and he could not resist its powers. Others even mightier fell to the ring. Do you think you are stronger than them? The One Ring is generative AI.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

📚💙 If you’re looking to stock up your TBR pile and want to buy from a small press run by lovely people with the killer combo of ethics and a stonking catalogue, you can’t go wrong with the brilliant Elsewhen Press.

"No one in Subteranea knew whether the country was likely to be at peace or war, or what alliances or secret treaties might oblige them at any moment to shed their blood in the interests of a foreign prince over a quarrel with which they had no possible concern."

"I asked Chat GPT for a pep talk. It replied with 'Notice that your discomfort right now mirrors the argument you are making. You are sitting with uncertainty. that is not incidental. It is the work.'"

For this, we're burning the planet. For this we're funnelling money to fascists.

Absolutely. I wouldn’t ally myself with the SoA’s stance for all the money in the world.
