As the 🇪🇺 Commission prepares the Tech Sovereignty Package, the analysis shows that rewarding data centre flexibility – through targeted grid access frameworks, stronger price signals & integration into energy planning – can help align 🇪🇺 digital competitiveness, climate goals and energy security. 8/x

💶 The analysis also shows: if up to 20% of annual data centre electricity demand is shifted to hours and/or locations with abundant clean power, this would result in ~20 TWh less fossil based electricity generation p.a. & €1.7 billion per year in consumer savings, primarily from reduced gas use. 7/x

Connection queues are growing for both renewables & large consumers, with waits of up to 10 years. Flexible Connection Agreements (FCAs) could unlock earlier grid access in exchange for clearly defined, limited flexibility during system stress hours – avoiding delays while reducing grid pressure.6/x

💡 Peak capacity in today’s power system is still largely gas fired. Using #datacentre flexibility instead of new back up plants directly reduces exposure to volatile fossil fuel prices and lowers system costs. 5/x

✔️ avoid around 4 GW of new peak capacity
✔️ significantly cut reliance on fossil gas for system adequacy, saving around €500 million a year 4/x

Why does it matter? 💡
📉 If data centres operate flexibly for just 120 hours per year – using demand shifting and on site batteries – this could:
✔️ reduce additional peak electricity demand by 45 per 3/x

At the same time, #datacentre grid connection lead times are now stretching up to 7–10 years, with cities including Amsterdam & Dublin even suspending new connections.

Our new study co-authored together with Deloitte shows that relatively limited flexibility can make a significant difference. 2/x

➡️ Das neue #Klimaschutzprogramm ist voraussetzungsreich und gibt den Ministerien wichtige Aufgaben mit auf den Weg. Es zeigt aber auch: Deutschland kann seine #Klimaziele grundsätzlich erreichen, wenn die Bundesregierung zu wirksamen Maßnahmen greift. 7/x

🏡Was zudem wichtig ist: dringend erforderliche Klimafortschritte bei #Gebäuden, auch durch einen starken Mieterschutz. Insgesamt muss das #GMG sicherstellen, dass Deutschlands Gebäude im Jahr 2045 ohne fossile Brennstoffe beheizt werden. 6/x

❗ Umso mehr kommt es jetzt auf die konkrete Ausgestaltung an und darauf, dass die anstehenden Gesetzesänderungen die #Klimaschutzlücke schließen – und Deutschland unabhängiger von fossilen Energieimporten machen. 5/x

🚨 Außerdem: Das #KSP stützt sich auf inzwischen veraltete Daten. Mit Blick auf die Klimaschutzlücke, die inzwischen von 25 auf 30 Mio Tonnen CO₂ bis 2030 korrigiert wurde, bleiben die jetzt vorgelegten Maßnahmen mindestens drei Millionen Tonnen CO₂ hinter den erforderlichen Einsparungen zurück. 4/x

...die absehbar deutlich weniger #Emissionen einsparen als die bisher geltenden Regelungen – wie etwa das Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz (GMG), die Abschwächung der CO₂-Flottengrenzwerte oder Änderungen am Erneuerbaren-Energien-Gesetz durch das Netzpaket. 3/x
