It may not surprise you to learn Charli XCX is a good actor. What is surprising about her new movie Erupcja is what *KIND* of actor she is.

This is slight but enjoyable, a Polish riff on Before Sunrise that I also hope gets a sequel in 9 years.

I both dread and anticipate the crowd that will spend their 4/20 seeing a ska band.

As for Beatty, “Reds” is his bravura turn. He got the idea, nurtured it for a decade, found the financing, wrote most of the script, produced, and directed and starred and still found enough artistic detachment to make his Reed into a flawed, fascinating enigma instead of a boring archetypal hero. I liked this movie. I felt a real fondness for it. It was quite a subject to spring on the capitalist Hollywood movie system, and maybe only Beatty could have raised $35 million to make a movie about a man who hated millionaires. I noticed, here at the end of the credits, a wonderful line that reads: Copyright copy MCMLXXXI Barclays Mercantile Industrial Finance Limited. John Reed would have loved that.

Folks online are criticizing Boots Riley because his new film was produced by Megan Ellison, the daughter of Larry Ellison, and they see this as an ethical lapse.

It made me think of Roger Ebert's review of Reds, a reminder that the movie business - all art, really - requires patronage.

Next month, The Shakespeare Theater in DC will have a big production of Othello with Wendell Pierce in the title role.

Buried in the cast listing is another intriguing detail: Lucas Iverson, better known as Ogilvie on The Pitt, will play Othello's most trusted lieutenant.

Wasteman - Spectrum Culture Wasteman is an old-fashioned prison thriller that serves as a showcase for actor David Jonsson, who plays a young convict whose biggest obstacle to freedom sleeps right next to him.

I am a sucker for a gritty prison thriller.

Not only is the setting tailor-made for suspense, they are often a showcase for exciting new talent. The new movie with Wasteman is no different, with David Jonsson and Tom Blyth as mismatched cellmates.
