I found it weird and a bit unsettling to work in the European institutions and have everything in English rather than French which would frankly make more sense at this point.

But I do love the way EU documents these days specify "use the correct spelling: Irish English not US English"

Hitler had to get an Enabling Act passed to be able to rule by decree. Trump seems not to have had to go to so much trouble.

Ethics in the Trump era: there’s a risk Starmer will fall over appointing a guy with Trumpian ethics only for the UK to elect a guy with Trumpian ethics instead.

It’s depressing to watch Canadians being played for suckers when we already know all this 👇🏼

I’m so mad I chose to watch this. Nothing changes with America: self-interested oil adventurism masquerading as dignified, democracy-building foreign policy. America is a f lie. Top to bottom.

Good Christ, the whole movie is one unending Texas Hold ‘Em metaphor. I lack the words. The unseriousness these people held themselves to

I mean, the hospital visits to American vets is disturbing. Of course this film pays no heed to the many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who were lawlessly murdered by this war

Catching up on long-lost presidential films: “W.” took 1h40m to even acknowledge he maybe didn’t (& he DID NOT) win the 2000 elxn.

It’s billed as a comedy but better seen as a farce. All those hindreads of thousands of lives lost for some Freudian fatherly approval scheme. Jesus Christ wept.

It gets a lot of flack…young me very much enjoyed it! But then again, I was 12, at best

This is a really important point. Just as the new Hungarian government will have a major challenge in dismantling Orbán’s state (and ignoring any impulse to keep it for its own ends), the efforts to defend and ensure the EU’s democratic resilience will also have to continue with the same impetus.

Hungary has chosen Europe.

Europe has always chosen Hungary.

A country reclaims its European path.

The Union grows stronger.

The result is huge. Vast in its consequences. Orban was the inspiration to all those who came after him. He served as Putin's puppet, undermining Europe from within and Ukraine from without. He funded a vast network of fascists around the world. It's all vulnerable now, or falling apart entirely.

Even at its worst, Hungary has a former Orban supporter against corruption winning, in the face of Trump and others.

Magyar may not be any liberal ideal, but breaking Orban’s illiberal machine and methodology is a welcome break.

And the international significance of Orban losing is immeasurable.

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...

Orbán Viktor @PM_ViktorOrban Had a great meeting today with @IDUAlliance Chairman @stephenharper. International cooperation between right-wing, conservative parties is more important than ever. Chairman Harper is a great ally in this respect. Thank you for your support, Mr. Chairman!

It's kinda interesting to think about how differently Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper have spent their retirement years

Orban is not conceding because he's honourable. He's conceding because his defeat is so comprehensive even he can't pretend he won.

So you're telling me that sometimes, when a fascist strongman finally loses in the face of overwhelming popular opposition, it gives the opposition a chance to remake the Constitution???

Tonight I'm thinking of the many Hungarians I've met over the years - many of them abroad against their wishes, many of them queer - who haven't stopped fighting, for sixteen years. For most of us, Orbán was an on-and-off nuisance on TV - at best. For them, he was a constant nightmare.
