Last reaction of the semester before finals in the teaching lab, and I find out that one student’s favorite band is Dio.

Me: LIKE A RAIN-BOW!!!!!

Been rocking out as a class while doing a bleach oxidation for the last two hours.

I know I didn’t win that day, but I’m also pretty sure everyone lost 🤣

PI Nostalgic For Era When One Person's Music Taste Was Inflicted On Entire Lab MADISON, WI—Expressing a wistfulness he could not fully articulate, professor of biochemistry Dr.

Soundgarden for large scale separations and parallel peptide syntheses at my bench. Metallica when one colleague was cranking high-throughput screening. Grace Potter for another when they purified epoxides. At least we took turns! #chemsky #chemchat

Editorial | Penn has an AI problem The Daily Pennsylvanian Editorial Board argues that Penn’s choice to embrace AI is detrimental to the institution of higher education.

Really thought-provoking:
“schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship”

My colleague @kmullaugh.bsky.social and our students have done some really awesome things - this is one of them!

We used to put one on the minivan every summer growing up. That name 🤣

This was a really cool study to be a part of - the students and as always my colleague @jaygforsythe.bsky.social were brilliant!

We made fresh bleach, dated the bottle, and cleaned up. Meanwhile my colleagues had been wandering the hallways wondering who was smoking weed. That’s how we 1) found out about the fume exhaust issue and 2) discovered the nuances of how bad that compound can smell. We also date the bleach. 3/end

The weather matters because the hood exhaust on our building is too close to the air intake. Enough got out into the hood (100 or 200 uL), so the student used the bleach bottle but that clearly was expired, and dispersed thiols in the hood. They came running to my office smelling like a skunk (2/x)

Working with thiols requires fresh 10% bleach solution in a squirt bottle otherwise it’s a high-stakes test of lab technique. The one in my lab was not dated, and a student was using methyl thioglycolate on a humid day. (1/x)

We had two families of conformers for a tetrapeptide with distinct sets of shifts. I believe we included the additional set of shifts in a separate file for the same sample. Once you’re in the system, I think you can message back and forth with a curator about it further. They were really helpful.

Sometimes lab work feels like good therapy and our in current era that’s been true. Combinatorial peptide libraries incoming for a CURE I’m teaching with @jaygforsythe.bsky.social on some collaborative work between our labs and NASA! @cofcharleston.bsky.social #chemsky

Participating in the NSF REU program at UVA cemented for me that grad school in organic chemistry was the path I wanted - I wrote my first applications the week I got back. The experience showed me so much of what I wanted my career to be. This is tragic and shortsighted beyond words.

“I’m gonna be honest with you Dr G, I slept through class. This is the second time I’ve seen snow in my life and I went skim boarding down a hill and fell a bunch times and I’m really sore. I’ve been playing in the snow all week!”

Thank you to this student for sharing some much needed joy. #chemsky
