Victory slips away as marathon runner celebrates too soon The dramatic end to the Delaware Marathon occurred when the lead runner slowed in celebration before a trailing marathoner sprinted toward the finish line .

Don't celebrate too early.
Wait for the NOA (notice of award)

We have proposed a replicable method for comparative genomics in this paper.

PS: This is Suneel's 107th paper, and my 71st!!!

This is such a beautiful anecdote about Phil. I had the honor of meeting him only once. It was a beautiful encounter and his enthusiasm to encourage ECRs like me, was infectious. His passing was shocking to me. Irreparable void created in Bioinformatics community. RIP Phil!

Met Prof. Bob Jernigan, after 15 years! Also met our bioinformatics alumni Jaya Vasavi. Yesterday's posters were super good! Had a good time. Also, it was nice reconnecting with Harpreet Singh from THE Ohio State Univ. We met first in 2012.

The day ended with conference swag collection and topped with collecting the certificate for curating the special issue of
@biophysj.bsky.social @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social
from EiC @frettinglab.bsky.social and John Long! This was a surprise...πŸ’—πŸ’• Super proud of how the issue turned out!

Today was a great day with a dedicated session on science communication with Jeremy Berg, Holden Thorpe, and Daniel Cohen talking about why scicomm is a must in today's time. Also, my favorite Darwin quote. Met a few friends and other ambassadors as well!!!

An amazing set of talks in the theory and computation subgroup. Met a couple of friends. And ended with dinner with my postdoc supervisor with lots of things catching up over delicious turkish food!!!

For many years, we never had institutional email ids. As a postdoc I had an .edu address, until then I had used my .com address. There are so many institutions on this side of the world where .com addresses are still used for official academic communications by students.

🌱 Why this matters
These results provide a curated set of innate immune gene candidates for:
β€’ Disease-resilient breeding
β€’ Climate-adapted livestock
β€’ Future functional validation

πŸ”— Genotype meets function
By integrating PBMC gene-expression data, we show that several immune genes with genomic variants also show distinct basal expression in healthy indicine cattle.

Genomic variation means functional immune readiness.

🧬 Population genomics tells the story
PCA, FST, dXY, and selective sweep analyses reveal:
β€’ Clear indicine–taurine separation
β€’ Strong immune-gene divergence
β€’ Breed-specific selection signals
Pathogen pressure leaves a genomic signature.

🧠 Key finding #2
Two innate immune genes stand out:
πŸ‘‰ CARD9
πŸ‘‰ NLRP8

High-impact, indicine-specific variants were found in all four indicine breeds, but were absent in taurine and crossbred cattle.

This is a genome-wide view of innate immunity. Key Finding #1:
Indicine breeds carry more immune-related variants than taurine and crossbred cattleβ€”
across structural variants, copy-number changes, and high-impact SNVs.

This isn’t just diversityβ€”it’s adaptation.

We tackle this using integrative whole-genome analysis across indicine, taurine, and crossbred cattle.
πŸ“Š Study design at a glance
β€’ >100 animal samples
β€’ 6 breeds (4 indicine, 1 taurine, 1 crossbreed)
β€’ Whole-genome seq
β€’ SNVs, InDels, CNVs, SVs + population genomics

Fantastic way to start the year πŸŽ‰ with a preprint from Yennamalli Lab! This is a ICAR-NASF funded project in collaboration with NDRI, Karnal!
What makes indicine cattle naturally resilient to infections and harsh environments? A πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡πŸ§¬ 1/8
