Duane Bratt: Gerrymandering electoral map will erode Alberta democracy Thursday was a bad day for democracy, and possibly setting up an even worse day for democracy.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that the minority report was gerrymandered to benefit the UCP by significantly diluting urban voters.”

I see this in my future:

I’ve authored or co-authored transportation plans for many cities, but I’ve also been asked on many occasions to peer review transportation plans written by staff or other consultants. That’s always an interesting exercise, and one I enjoy doing… at least most of the time. I’m doing that right now.

It turns out, they can sense daylight through the tops of their heads and their circadian rhythms continue to be synchronized to daylight. So… yeah!

(Yes, this story has been burned into my memory nearly 20 years later)

He should have told them them the story he told us in PSYC 369 about the experiments on sparrows to test if they can sense daylight without their eyes, which they tested by removing their eyes, and then said, “If you don’t want to be like those sparrows, you’ll make it standard all the time.”

Going to be honest: demoralizing does not even begin to describe job hunting in Calgary right now.

Actually I have and, regardless of this being a different argument than your original argument, discounting rural Albertans and treating them like a monolith is a losing strategy before the gerrymandering and also a losing strategy after the gerrymandering so we can either try to beat the UCP or not

I’m simply explaining the reality of what the election will look like if the new boundaries happen.

In addition to disproportionately representing rural areas with ridings that have lower population distribution than urban areas, they will also seek to dilute the proportion of urban voters in ridings that represent cities

You’re missing my point here that when they redraw the boundaries of urban ridings to include more rural residents, that extra 5% may be needed to win previously winnable urban risings

I learned a lot in the research for this and I'm proud of the episode we put together. Reactionary cultural framing of childhood and family life can make it hard to talk about trans issues productively w/o unpacking a lot of that first. We try to do that here.

Because it seems bad and will be bad but also they’re definitely going to do it.

So while acknowledging that the UCP’s pending attempt to gerrymander Alberta is really bad and we should fight against it, the Alberta NDP is going to actually devote organizing resources to rural areas, right? Right? 🥲 #ableg
