workday party . our morning meeting was very boring the same yearly safety film was dragging into midday the boss stepped out for a smoke everyone talked over the cautionary tales some guys started sharing snacks they had in their lunch bags Boris shared corn nuts, Jim a couple of donuts, Chris a bag of chips Lem had the bright idea to stream some music and the jokes and laughter grew louder until the boss returned pallid he got a call, he said, from Rob’s wife explaining why Rob had missed our last party at work.

hung a bird feeder from a tall pole, planted into the ground lives ago for backyard nights when parties required lights today the grass is tall the deck needs repair branches need trimming spiderwebs drape the boughs the hot tub is a dry burden so many memories of gatherings with good friends learned by heart now only there’s just enough day for bird music & books still, this expensive peace is worth sheltering in place & hoping that whatever happens my garden can flourish on its own
