An enormous pleasure to be on stage with the brilliant @enortonhistory.bsky.social discussing our two books, #Economica & #Womenwhoruledtheworld. There is something very special about being in the same space with fellow authors, historians, readers and book lovers. #WinchesterBooksFestival
Huge thanks to @echistsoc.bsky.social and especially @ericbschneider.bsky.social @judyzara.bsky.social @patrickwallis.bsky.social @alkaraman.bsky.social and Maureen Galbraith for a weekend of stimulating research, discussion, debate & conversations #EHS100
Over the last 3 days, economic historians from Britain & across the world gathered for the @echistsoc.bsky.social annual conference hosted @lseechist.bsky.social. At a time of significant global flux, it’s more important than ever that we learn from the past. #EHS100 #EconHist
In late Victorian Britain, #CharlesBooth organised and funded the production of a set of maps that documented (street by street) poverty and inequality in the capital. They became known as the London #PovertyMaps and you can browse them online @lselibrary.bsky.social: booth.lse.ac.uk/map
How did the painted egg become a symbol of #Easter? The answer can be found in the #economics of supply and demand. #history #paintedegg
This is an amazing find. The article rightly points out the technological and economic importance of the loom and the calculations it required of the women who used it.
Fiber arts, which are coded as feminine, still don't get the respect they deserve (cough cough Hank Green's knitting video).
Really looking forward to our conversation. #Winchester, here we come.
I am so looking forward to joining @vnbateman.bsky.social in conversation at Winchester Books Festival on 18 April. Tickets available here: winchesterbooksfestival.com/events/dr-vi...

“It is rare that I come away from a book with little criticism…but this book is an exception. I am a better economist for having read it & I would encourage others to do the same”. Huge thanks to Abigail R. Hall for this review of my latest book #Economica: link.springer.com/article/10.1... #econhis
“Economica is, above all, a great read…Bateman’s gifts as a scholar, writer and wit are beautifully displayed throughout”. Honoured that #Economica has been reviewed in the Economic History Review. Huge thanks to @judyzara.bsky.social for this review. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #econhis
Today is the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith’s the #WealthofNations, in which he argued that free trade & free markets were a far better way of organising the global economy than imperial domination, brute force & tariff protection. It seems that we still have a lot to learn.
@vnbateman.bsky.social I reviewed Economica for the @echistsocreview.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/.... It’s great! Thoroughly enjoyed it, and here I say why we need to take this long run view of women in economic activity very seriously
My message to fellow feminists: modesty culture is not our saviour - it will not deliver equality. It is a Trojan horse. While it promises to help women, it hurts women. Across the world, it constrains women’s work, health, safety & schooling. #MyBodyMyChoice is the only answer.
At #SundayPapersLive with #RosieViva delivering a revealing talk for #InternationalWomensDay2026. My message to Donald Trump: hands off women’s bodies.
Freedom of the mind cannot be achieved without freedom of the body.
This weekend, we're celebrating #InternationalWomensDay! ✨
