There are lots of problems with the weaponization of nostalgia in our modern era, and it can be easy to forget that there is a purer form, an empathetic and bittersweet form, that does have value. All it takes is not glamorizing the past when feeling loss over that version of your life being gone.
I am once again thinking about Sage Francis' beautiful "The Best of Times". www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA8h...
The fact they made this travesty and didn't even call it Your Own Personal Jesus is the worst crime of all.

I can't stop laughing at this post. It's perfect.

Same. We’re built different.
You either die cool, or live long enough to see yourself become cringe.
Watching INDUSTRY like: Harry Lawtey would make a hell of a Doctor Who.

I agree with you about art today! We had learned thing about our society and how parts of it internalize certain kinds of art and I think it’s responsible as an artist to respond appropriately. But I don’t think any of that was the obvious case in 1999 and we all learned things from what followed.
As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a misunderstood satire.
The thing that most struck me on my rewatch a few years ago was how sharp its portrayal as Tyler/Jack as hot and cold fuckboi was from Marla’s POV. Incisive.
RFK trying to save the antivaxx project from the disaster of the Trump presidency so it can live on.
The movie is downright caustic towards the space monkeys. It hates them so, so, so much.
You’re still not paying attention if you think Tony is admirable, but the path there is less rocky.
I do think something like The Sopranos falls into the trap Nerdlove is saying, and to a degree Breaking Bad though less so — not that it does it wrong, but by staying within its own world, The Sopranos can make Tony reprehensible as a normal human but seem cool within his sphere of evil assholes.
I recently rewatched Fight Club expecting to have this reaction, but Fight Club does exactly this! It does it well! It has a major narrative twist to make it as clear as possible that Durden sucks! I’m with @luxalptraum.com on this that there is no satire obvious enough for some people.
lol I know right?

Bluesky whiners wouldn't have lasted ten minutes in a Usenet flame war. If they'd touched Tumblr in 2012 for even thirty seconds, they would have been incinerated by the rage tsunamis that battered its shores.
These companies killed Usenet and IRC, I've been living on borrowed time in online social spaces for decades as a result. Free me from this hell, Bluesky, I dare you.
p.s. it is not the responsibility of users of a corporate product to take actions that benefit the bottom line of that corporation at their own expense, and any argument you want to pretzel yourself into arguing the contrary is boot licking
For no reason at all, I'm just going to share my deeply personal essay on Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji Ikari, memory, identity, trauma, fathers, houses, the art that shapes us, and how it grows with us over time
TL;DR mass culture social media is cursed and unworkable, and those of us who stay here do it accepting the tradeoffs. There is no social media app that can let everyone into the same room without it getting ugly, no community that can exist without (sometimes ill-considered!) standards of behavior.
What I'm saying here is that, even if you are correct that Bluesky Being Mean To [x group] is the cause of what you're seeing in the data, that doesn't mean you're correct that this is a bad thing. Maybe it's not good for Bluesky the Company, but maybe it *is* good for the Bluesky *community*.
Is it the responsibility of a community to treat people instigating fights as people worth the community's time and energy? Can you think of any offline community that functions that way and stays viable for anyone involved in said community?
Regardless of what you optimize for, you can't shove the entirety of human culture into a single app and have it stay a coherent community. There is no inherent benefit to a community to allow in "all voices" and allow them to insert themselves into conversations in any way they individually choose.
