It'd mostly be an expansion on the points in my first response. Milbank has been telling these narratives for decades, but hasn't responded to the very compelling counter-arguments from folks like Stout and Dumler-Winckler. His liberalism is a thin, strawmanned concept.
The narrative can't withstand certain counter-arguments. E.g. Jeff Stout's *Democracy and Tradition* and Emily Dumler-Winckler's *Modern Virtue*.
Many appealing elements here, friend. But the totalizing, flat-ironed description of "liberalism" is frustrating at best. So much more complexity to the historical and conceptual history of modernity that is conveniently elided from the postliberal narrative.
"Is this way of life alive enough to be shared?"
Brilliant stuff here.
I will never, ever get over this.

I used BlueArk to import my tweets over while I gave this a try.
I joined Twitter in 2010, in my 1st year of grad school. I found a thriving ecosystem of theology nerds, niche political analysis, and strangely immediate means of communicating with writers and thinkers that I loved.
I'm skeptical that lightning can strike in the same way twice. But here goes.
New favorite morning walk in my temporary home of Seattle
Found myself re-reading the introduction of Jeffrey Stout's *Democracy and Tradition* this morning. This was written 20 years ago, or perhaps today.
There are silver linings to having Seattle as a temporary second home
Once again, @jake_meador is doing good work drawing attention to political theology from scholars who draw deeply on the historical tradition to address contemporary concepts too often strawmanned. This time, it’s Bowlin’s work on the virtue of tolerance...
One year ago today: married the smartest, kindest, most beautiful person I'd ever met. We're spending our anniversary in a way neither of us ever wanted or could anticipate. But cancer doesn't get the last word.
It's a wrap. So many life-giving conversations with new and old friends on Christian formation, justice, and not gaining the whole world only to lose your soul. Thanks to @james_ka_smith, @bethallisonbarr, @MalcolmBFoley, @catjonathantran, @EricSeanGregory, and @HootenWilson
Scenes from day one of a conference long in the planning: coffee and conversation with @MalcolmBFoley, @bethallisonbarr, @catjonathantran, @EricSeanGregory, opening plenary remarks, and a standing room-only concert from The Porter’s Gate.
Next week at @whitworth: so many good people talking about things that matter--calling, character, and an education of the mind, heart, & soul. Come hear @james_ka_smith, @catjonathantran, @HootenWilson, @bethallisonbarr, @MalcolmBFoley, & @EricSeanGregory...
Sunrise walk in Oxford
Grateful to the folks at @XScholarsReview who invited me to write this piece on the new challenges facing Christian higher education, along with a shoutout to our upcoming conference at @whitworth this October....
Hard to top this day in London: Dishoom for breakfast, sung eucharist at St Paul’s, the National Gallery, Hadestown, and North African fare at The Barbary
Oh, just another reason to be anti-monarchist 🤷🏻♂️
