1/ New working paper by Greg Muttitt and me, on equitable fossil fuel transitions. GST called for nationally determined contributions to global efforts, incl “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner”.

Electric vehicles are already cutting 2.3 million barrels of oil demand per day. That's about to double under a business-as-usual scenario this decade. It could go faster if EV sales rise, which there are indications they will at this oil price.

A new report published on 11 March by the UK's Climate Change Committee reinforces this point: the total cost of reaching net zero by 2050 is likely to be no greater than the cost of a single fossil fuel price shock - like the one triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Spain could be the only EU country to beat energy price hikes Spain spent the last six years investing heavily in wind and solar energy, leading to some of the cheapest power prices in Europe.

Between 2020 and 2024 Spain “cut its power sector import bill more than any other EU country.” It did this by adding new solar and wind farms which “avoided 26 billion cubic metres of gas imports costing €13.5 billion”.

100% d'acord.

Planet Wreckers: The Global North Countries Fueling the Fire Since the Paris Agreement Since the Paris Agreement, 4 Global North countries — the US, Canada, Australia & Norway — blocked global progress on oil and gas phaseout.

In the 10 years since the Paris Agreement, global oil and gas production has increased more than 8%, when it should have been falling.

Four countries -US, Canada, Australia and Norway- are overwhelmingly responsible for the increase. The rest of the world has DECREASED its production since Paris.

COP30 needs an implementation forum, not another cover decision The focus in Belém should be a plan to get results on climate action in the real world rather than haggling over a political statement

"If that can be kept short, and focused, why not? But there would still be a need for an implementation forum alongside to give it credibility."

Why COP30 needs a cover decision to succeed Amid entrenched divisions in formal negotiations, a cover decision is the most credible way to confront the ambition gap head-on

I wrote for @climatechangenews.com why #COP30 needs a #coverdecision to succeed

COP30’s credibility rests on how it confronts this ambition gap. If #COP30 must respond to this ambition gap, a cover decision emerges as the most credible path forward.
