Of all the books I’ve read recently on sleep, Nightmare Obscura by Michelle Carr is probably the most interesting.

The sleep to forget/sleep to remember model claims that the unique neurochemistry of REM sleep is designed both to consolidate emotional memories (sleep to remember) and to decrease the level of arousal associated with these memories (sleep to forget). As we've learned, there are high levels of activation in the amygdala uniquely in REM sleep, which supports the reactivation of emotional memories. However, the REM brain is also in a state of suppressed noradrenaline activity; noradrenaline is a neurotransmitter associated with arousal, so its inhibition during REM sleep means that we do not exhibit as much physiolagical
arousal as we do in waking life. This unique combination of high amy
dala activity combined with low noradrenaline means that the content of an emotional memory can be safely strengthened (and potentialy reexperienced in dreams) in a low-arousal state. Subsequent recall of the memory then benefits from lessened arousal, too, a learned diss-ciation. This prevents an unwanted buildup of anxiety associated wih emotional memories over time, but as we'll see later, this benefit is lot for those who experience nightmares.

Thank you again Henry Moore for your weighty contribution to my studio practice of using art books when adhering large sheets of paper to board.

While I was crouched down looking by a log I heard a crashing through the cottonwoods. A deer bound up into the far meadow.

They seemed curious about me starring at the ground moving leaves around like I’d lost something important.

As always, I was about to give up and then I found some.

Later, cooked them up in butter for dinner. 🤌

First morels of the season near the Columbia River in Oregon.

Not bad for an early morning walk with only a few snags on blackberry bushes.

Just heard the term ā€˜Competency Porn’ in reference to the Artemis II
mission. At first I was taken aback by the term. But yes, we are starved for news of integrity and competency.

There is a strategy in a game of chicken to throw your steering wheel out the window to appear crazy and determined. The act is so crazy the only option is for the other guy to swerve.

Not sure why that comes to mind this morning, but I feel like I’m in a car with a lunatic at the wheel.

That coffee and tea house has a witchy vibe maybe because of all the tarot decks. That’s not my thing but it’s a lovely aesthetic.

The waves are something fierce to watch! You can easily go see Thor’s Well, Spouting Horn and Devil’s Churn while in the area. At low tide they have nice areas for agate hunting.

There are two coffee shops - both great. I am partial to The Green Salmon as they have a Matcha latte with Reishi.

If you are driving to the Oregon Coast it is well worth the visit. Great coffee shop across the street and Luna’s to get fresh fish.

They are constructing a second building so I’m wondering what they might house there.

Yes, the clusters are opalized and are for sale. There were a few. I didn’t even look at the price as I did not want to be tempted. I should have.

Oh, the things I did not even photograph.

Ethiopian Opal with amber and green on a paper towel

Ethiopian Opal with amber and green on a paper towel

Apparently I’m a sucker for opals. There were a number of them in water which prevents them from cracking or crazing. Stable opals cost much more.

So now I’m trying to ā€˜slow dry’ my opal. When it’s wet it’s transparent with plays of color. Eventually I expect this one to become milky…

I should have taken a photo of what he brought back. The sunstones were cut and polished. Some with glowing reds emanating from the center. I collect raw stones, but could admire what he showed me.

I did pick up a unique blue ā€˜Holley agate’ which is from Holley, Oregon.

In the quiet beach town in Yachats, OR there’s a wonderful rock shop with corners full of curiosities.

Half the stuff I’m not sure is even out on display. I asked if they had sunstones ( a unique feldspar with copper inclusions found in Oregon). The guy goes into the back and brings back a box…

This one has flown to a new home.

The gallery full flood lighting isn’t t the best way to highlight the interference pigment used - the color shift seen from different vantage points.

Was thinking about testing out a different way to light it when someone stepped in and bought it.

This is also sometimes called a ā€˜false morel’ even though I don’t think it looks anything like a morel mushroom. But, you do find them in the same area where morel mushrooms will eventually show up.

For me spotting verpa (Sp. Verpa bohemica) or ā€˜early morels’ or ā€˜false morels’ in the leaf duff signifies the start of the spring mushroom season. Here in the PNW we hope to find some Morel mushrooms in the coming days or weeks.

That's a good bet. It will be interested to see what they think about it this time next year. I hope the West Coast takes a 'wait and see' how BC does approach.

Agree, I love feeds. Just don’t know if users really know how to add them. Just surmising from a number of artist friends who joined but then had a hard time finding there way here.

Also, I don’t think I’ve looked for new feeds in quite a while but I remember there were a lot to sort through…
