The final Computational Physics class test of the year approaches. I hope it brings the season to an appropriate close.

Kezia Dugdale has launched into her new role with a commitment to making Stonewall even more toothless and irrelevant than it was already.

The name is virtually indecipherable on the original record
Do you know anything about Estella Frances Solomons, the artist, who is listed as "Male" in the 1926 census but was "female" in 1911.
Estella Solomons
Following yesterday's post about the 1926 Irish Census I fell down a metaphorical rabbit hole following a request from a former colleague (who happens to be Jewish) to help find a relative of his who lived in Dublin at the time of the census. I found the person, which was nice,…
It's easy to succumb to outrage fatigue. But this was four days ago. 2,000 killed. 1.2 million displaced. Entire villages demolished. A 40km 'buffer zone' (10% of Lebanon's territory) annexed. It's barely raised a resigned shrug, but it meets the criteria for war crime. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
I found Eamon de Valera but, surprisingly, couldn't find a record for Constance Markievicz...

This is correct.

Oil painting of a lady with dark hair in Edwardian dress
Here is a self-portrait of the artist:
Her Wikipedia page says that she was married in 1925, but in the 1926 census she is described as "single". Her husband may have been away on the census date. There are two others listed at her address, both "servants".

There was an exhibition of Estella's work at the National Gallery in 2022

In a nutshell. 😊
Thanks to the efforts of a member of our Editorial Board, we now have a Wikipedia page.

The census only gives a small amount of information about people in 1926, but it's hard to resist trying to imagine what their lives might have been like.

A few years ago, intrigued by Bloom's lunch, I made myself a gorgonzola and mustard sandwich. It was an interesting taste, but not an experience I am anxious to repeat.
The best bit of Bloomsday is seeing all the people dressed up in Edwardian clothes.
In Ulysses, Leopold Bloom's address is 7 Eccles Street - a real address in 1904 but the house was demolished in the 60s - which is not far from this street.

Estella Frances Solomons is listed in both 1911 (when she was 28, occupation "Artist") and 1926 when her age is given as 40.
Intriguingly Estella's sex is given as Female in 1911 and Male in 1926.

Possibly not a widow. She is listed as married. Her husband was listed in 1911 as "travelling for drapery", which sounds like some sort of travelling salesman. He might just have been away on the census date...
There's no Molly Goldberg in 1926. There is a Fanny Goldberg but her age is 47. I'm sure she is a different one of the three Fanny Goldbergs listed in 1911, one of whom was 32 then and living in the same part of Dublin.
There's a Molly and Fanny (sisters) both listed at the same address in Limerick in 1911. Father Louis and mother Rachel.

The Dublin address is Oakfield Place, which still exists. I see there was a synagogue in the same street. That area is much gentrified now - houses go for €1M!
Tilly (sic) and Lewis (sic) are also there in 1901...but their residence is in King's County (Offaly). The profession of Lewis is "Hawking"...

The 1911 census shows the family with a boy listed as "Hyamie" aged 2. Tillie's husband was Loie Goldberg and both are recorded as being from Russia. Tillie is listed as "illiterate"

Caption Competition!
The household record is intriguing. There is a Tillie Goldberg whose age is 47 and listed as married, but the 5 others are aged 24 and under. There is no record of Tillie's husband - Hyman's father?
