4/ Often, speaking of hope might seem a bit detached. But hate and extremism can’t be met in the middle; we must offer an alternative.
We’ll continue to stand with Israelis & Palestinians working to create a drastically different reality on the ground.

3/ To hold that complexity during times of celebration and of mourning is to honour those who have lost and sacrificed so much in this conflict.
When a resolution to the conflict feels further than ever we need to work to ensure that it remains central to the agenda.
2/ Israelis & Palestinians alike deserve freedom and safety; the past few years have made it clear these are intrinsically linked.
This is an opportunity to reflect on what independence truly means. Statehood, democracy, freedom, dignity and security are all components of that.
1/ Today is Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s 78th Independence Day.
For many people across Israel-Palestine this has been a particularly complex day in recent years. Jewish statehood is a cause for celebration, but Palestinian statehood seems to be getting further away.
There has been a significant surge in violent antisemitism in the UK, with further attacks over the weekend. Everyone must take a stance against this hatred. Jewish people have the right to feel safe.

We’re appalled by last night’s arson attack on ambulances in Golders Green. These ambulances, operated by the Hatzola organisation, provide lifesaving services to people across North London. This attack is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime by the police – the rising number of threats against British Jewish life must not be tolerated. We must be clear that antisemitism and hatred have no place in our society. We stand alongside Hatzola, and with all those working to protect the British Jewish community and to fight hatred.

We are saddened by the attack yesterday at Temple Israel in Michigan, one of the largest Jewish congregations in the United States. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and with the wider Jewish community in Michigan and across the US. Jewish communities around the world are increasingly exposed to antisemitism. No community should ever be targeted or blamed for the actions of the Israeli government, and Jewish people must be able to gather safely, free from fear of violence or intimidation. We stand in solidarity with all those confronting hatred and violent extremism in our communities.

Once again Israelis, Iranians and civilians across the entire Middle East find themselves thrown into a war of uncertainty. The speed at which the war is escalating and the numbers of lives that have already been lost is a stark reminder of the price of the failure of diplomacy. Few will mourn the death of Ayatollah Khamenei; indeed it is impossible to ignore the voices of Iranians who yearn for the cruel regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran to be overthrown. The scenes in the UK of the Iranian diaspora celebrating on Saturday night highlight the extent of this feeling. Yet any long-term regime change must be led by the Iranian people for it to be successful. Without clear aims and an exit strategy it is hard to see that how stability and security will emerge either for Iran and its people, or for Israel whose destruction the Iranian regime continues to call for. With leaders on all sides of this war that have shown time and again they do not care about the interests of those they govern, we know that innocent civilians will pay the price. Our thoughts are with all civilians in the region and those here concerned for their safety and welfare.

Gazans desperately trying to reach aid are being shot dead.
On the ground hungry Palestinians are being killed. Underground the hostages are suffocating.
This isn’t security, it’s politics.
As we wait for politicians to end this, people are dying for nothing.
