Sacrifice your job for the glorious AI future How tech CEOs use the threat of job loss to distract from how AI is really used against workers

Perplexity’s CEO is just the latest tech leader to tell the public their jobs will be sacrificed on the altar of the glorious AI future.

It’s a compelling narrative, but it distracts us from the real impact of AI: not to take the human out of the loop, but to take away their power and cut their pay

The UCP Tried to Kill a Health Story with Claims That Didn’t Stand Up | The Tyee The government cited numbers that its own data contradicted.

After the @theijf.org found Edmonton paramedics’ overtime jumped 81% in three years, staff from Premier Danielle Smith’s office messaged reporters and editors, claiming data was omitted and asking the story be rewritten or deleted.

At least one news outlet complied. @brettmckay.bsky.social reports.

Polish man arrested following undercover CNN investigation into online rape networks | CNN Polish authorities have arrested a man in connection with the alleged rape of an “unknowing victim” that was recorded and shared online, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin said Thursday.

It's interesting to me that a story about online rape networks doesn't seem to have broken through?

The story's inception was instigated in part by Gisèle Pelicot's rapes. Her husband drugged and and raped her and then invited dozens of other men to rape her while she was drugged.

BC Health Experts Say the Province Has Solutions to the Toxic Drug Crisis. 10 Years In, Policies Still Ignore The Evidence. “We have this bizarre dichotomy where everybody agrees that this is a health issue, but the majority of the resources…goes to law enforcement.”

Two events this week in Victoria marked the 10 year anniversary of the public health emergency of the #toxicdrugcrisis in BC — one inside the Legislature building and one outside.

I went to both, and found experts on either side of the wall saying the same things:

This first line in this article "It was 2014 when I first heard of fentanyl entering the unregulated drug supply." feels like a stab in my heart.

It was in 2014 that I learned about the contaminated supply by losing my youngest son Danny to it.
The day that made me an accidental advocate.

I teach on the mythologizing of American journalism's supposed noble origins in my Race, Media & International Affairs class.

For a good chunk of American newspaper history, stretching to colonial papers-- there was sensationalizing, unverified news, and papers that actively called for violence!

I saw this documentary a few days before speakers from the public came to Council last night to address the toxic drug crisis and city enforcement.

Every time someone had to interrupt themselves to say to Council, "our friends are dying," I felt that. I thought about those friends I've lost too. 💜
