Yeah, thinking about it early is a great call! It definitely can help drive a lot of decisions if you know how to shape your architecture early on.

Yep! We had done something that worked pretty quick, but broke as soon as we tried to implement changes. So then we had to backtrack for a week to fix it all.

It's rough too since saving/loading isn't some new feature, content, or even impactful to gameplay like balance tweaks so it feels like there's nothing to show for all the time spent on it. Guess that's encouragement to design it well the first time!

Yep, feel you. Been head down for the past week after realizing that some balance changes break the loading function!

Yeah… this is our first time with saving and loading, so we totally broke the game when we updated something. I think we’ve spent the past week revamping our saving structure so it’s far less brittle! But that was a painful lesson.

Before we got started in game dev, we both thought save games were just... like... some sort of snapshot of the game state? Like maybe there was a standard way to do this? Apparently, for every game you kinda just make up the save/load structure as you go.

I'm not quite up to Silksong levels of masochism... I never did well with platformers. But Expedition 33 has been every bit as gorgeous as I was hoping. I think my only gripe is with the lip synching.

A new challenger approaches! Now that our demo is up on Itch, we've been able to make some progress on further progression. Get ready for slimes to enter the fray.

First week of our game being out! We passed 100 wishlists on Steam already, which is actually way more than we were expecting for our first Steam page ever. Thanks guys!

Already working on adding some suggested features to Desktop Legends. Coming soon: clicking the hero will make him attack immediately instead of having to wait for his auto-attack cooldown.

Phew, took the day off of a lot of stuff yesterday for Labor Day, but hitting the short week strong this morning! We've got over 100 wishlists on Steam since launching our page and our demo on itch.io! Off to a great start!

All of the game assets for the itch demo are ready, time to make some progress on updates for the Steam demo! New arena packs, new enemy types, maybe even more hero upgrades and interventions. It's wild to think about how far we've come since picking up game dev in April!

We may not have the Steam page officially launched yet (it's coming, I promise) but here's one of the screenshots that will be on the page! Customize your arena, upgrade your hero, fight off hordes of enemies, all while going about your normal day.

This week in game dev: Getting our demo ready to launch on itch! Slight hiccup, we got fancy with some of our node structures and now our game runs great on desktop as one of those desktop buddy apps, but is totally not playable in a web browser. Yet.

Totally! Finished is better than perfect! Sometimes you gotta just say “this is good enough” and maybe lie a little and say you’ll come back to it later 😅

I swear, so much of game design is just reiterating the user interface... Or fixing sprites that I'd missed doing a shadow on. I feel like I never get to check things off the list, we just add more on 🥲

Summoning divine interventions? Yep, we're working on a desktop idler that will be fully idle, but with the option to be more involved whenever you want to. Call down meteors, shake goblins for loose change, and more!

Coming up on a Steam page launch in the near future! We just need to make our trailer, a few more screenshots of gameplay, and a library hero image. (Why do we need a hero image if we don't even have a demo to add to people's libraries yet...?)

Didn’t know about #internationalcatday but now I do! Here’s a picture of our dev kitties, Charlie and Tress. Named for characters in Brandon Sanderson’s “Tress of the Emerald Sea.”

Yeah, that's a good point, it can only be a positive for people who do leave their sound on as long as we offer a way to turn sounds off. Amusingly, I'm not sure that cozy music is going to fit our vibe, which is why we were wondering about this to begin with.

8 months ago 1 0 1 0

I'd really like to know, how many people turn off music and sound in idle games? Like, should we even spend the energy on those if people just immediately turn them off? Or does it hurt the initial vibe if there's no sound?
