Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

NASA scrapes by on ~$25B. Giving them an extra $85B is "Mars Base by 2035" money. Nuclear thermal propulsion, orbital shipyards, deep-space habitats. We stop talking about space and actually go there to stay.

Option C: Brains and Pipes.
For $58B/year, we can fund tuition-free Community College for every American.
With the remaining $27B? We replace 60% of all lead water pipes in the US.
In two years, the lead is gone and the degrees are free.

Option B: End Homelessness (with overkill).
HUD says ending homelessness via housing/vouchers costs ~$20-30B.
With $85B, we don’t just "fund" it; we crush it. We build permanent supportive housing with on-site medical/addiction specialists and still have $40B left over for R&D.

Option A: The Veteran Overhaul.
There are ~5.4M of us on disability. With $85B, we could give every single one of them a permanent $1,300/month raise.

Or? We could fully privatize mental health care for vets (unlimited private therapy) AND wipe out all veteran student debt in Year 1.

I ran the numbers. If we sliced just 1/10th off the US Defense Budget, we’d have ~$85 billion a year to play with.
