As someone who worked at a coal power plant until 2021, the same is true for fossil fuels. We had already been paid for our output months in advance but because the power needed was less than demand when the time came, we were paid to stay off as well. It was a huge cash cow and yes we gamed it.

All are part of the bigger picture on this.
Sadly, as with most things, lack of progress under the Tories outside us years behind where we need to be.
Battery storage, other types of storage (eg hydro electric or even hydrogen) is a major way.
Better transmission line infrastructure to move it around the country where it's needed (which the Greens and Lib Dems like to block).

And the important thing is that it gives us the time to build more renewable energy, more nuclear energy.
So we reduce further (perhaps to zero) the amount of gas used in energy generation and permanently break the link between electricity and gas prices!

Is it perfect? No.
Does it give us more certainty on prices in the long term? Yes.
Does it have risks? Yes - if gas prices fall substantially we won't benefit as much.
