Thank you to Andrew Barker for making this dynamic explicit from the stage! And advocating articulately for more idealism. #uksg2026

Is anyone else also struggling with the unspoken tension between perhaps more idealistic and more pragmatic views juxtaposed in quite this way? We need both to advance and this seems a false and frustrating dichotomy. @uksg.bsky.social #uksg2026

Advancing Long-form Open Access Practice **RLUK in partnership with SCONUL and ARMA and with funding from UKRI** seeks to articulate the current challenges and opportunities that UK research institutions face in responding to the evolving OA long-form publishing landscape. The **goal** of the first work package of this project, commissioned from Information Power, is _to deliver a report and roadmap to show where we are with long-form OA, share what has been learned, and to provide clarity and direction for where UK research organisations โ€“ in partnership with stakeholders with whom they want to travel โ€“ are going_. To become active in an **Exchange of Experience Network** and the project, please register your interest via https://forms.gle/Xyhk6GvzF9YRZoza7. With the wider project ARMA, RLUK, and SCONUL have come together to enable a more coordinated and strategic approach in the transition to OA long-form publications. This project is a collective intervention to support UK research organisations in implementing OA: to reduce duplication, improve readiness, and support institutions ahead of likely future policy requirements.

Smaller publishers are vital to scholarly communication. Their ability to transition sustainably to #OA is constrained by structural inequities of scale, resources, and systemic barriers.
