(A) Species tree relationships of six cetaceans with genome assemblies, including the humpback whale. Branch lengths are in coalescent units. Boxed numbers correspond to the number of positively selected genes per branch. (B) Gene Ontology (GO) biological process terms for positively selected genes across all cetaceans. (C) Cancer gene names and functions from the COSMIC database that are under positive selection in cetaceans. Superscripts next to gene names correspond to tumor suppressor gene (T), oncogene (O), and fusion gene (F) and asterisks correspond to FDR corrected p-value < 0.01 (**), 0.001 (***), 0.0001 (****).
Humpback whales (+ many other whales) have evolved large body sizes + long lives. Cancer should ⬆️ w/body size + age but whales do not suffer ⬆️ cancer risk. 212 genes in the humpback whale genome show evidence of positive selection, some of which may ⬇️ cancer #2026MMM doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msz099

Adapted from Axelsson et al. 2013 Fig 2c: Histogram showing the distribution of diploid amylase copy number in wolf (n=35, blue) and dog (n=136, red). Dogs carry more copies of the starch-digesting gene AMY2B than wolves. Additional copies make dogs better than wolves at digesting starchy foods like grains & vegetables.
Dogs evolved to eat your leftovers! Comparing dog & wolf genomes revealed dogs have up to 30 EXTRA copies of the amylase gene (AMY2B) that helps digest starch. This is a key genomic signature of living alongside humans & table scraps for thousands of years 🐕 www.nature.com/articles/nat... #2026MMM

ultimately, while menstruating species did have overall more KIR genes than non-menstruators, when we account for phylogeny the difference is not significant.
this work was possible thanks to my co-authors @maelledaunesse.bsky.social and @camilleberthelot.bsky.social !
we looked at whether menstruating species had more diverse KIR gene families compared to non-menstruators, as has been hypothesized due to this family’s important roles in pregnancy.

We need to be able to see that the line "accommodations have gone too far" is an expression of the ableist notion that disabled students do not belong in higher ed. Its fundamentally an anxiety about the fact that disabled students get an "advantage" over abled students.
"Echoes of eugenics: confronting its effects in indigenous genomics" is a particularly important essay given the recent spate of human genetic engineering startups...
