Way Yuhl (@wayyuhl) Australia doesn't force its citizens to vote. It forces its government to make voting possible for every citizen. In 1924, voter turnout dropped below 60%, so parliament passed a compulsory voting law with a fine of just $20 AUD. The fine isn't the point. The law makes the government legally responsible for ensuring every citizen can vote. Mobile polling teams go to remote areas, hospitals, and nursing homes. Elections are on Saturdays. Postal, pre-poll, and telephone voting are standard. Turnout went from under 60% to over 90% overnight and has stayed there for a hundred years. Voter suppression is structurally impossible when the government is legally obligated to make voting accessible.
