Finding out one of your favorite artists is a piece of shit and then spending the rest of the day realizing you did this to yourself because we shouldn't idolize anyone just for their art.
I feel like I restrict the amount of recreational time I spend on the internet, but every year or so I see a negative impact the internet is having on my mental, & I'm like "damn, y'all just been living like this?" Like when I avoided TikTok for years & then got sucked into it for a month straight.
5 beers deep and full sending everything, but with the awareness that this is a dangerous sport, so taking more care to pay attention to what I say and post than usual. In other words; there are no negatives to alcohol.
I always have an existential crisis whenever I remember that every moment in history is an unprecedented point in history and we have no idea what's going to happen.
It's okay to be proud of who you are, but how do we begin to dismantle stereotypes if we don't first understand why they exist? We don't need a single new song about being a toxic-male unless it's going to be an actual analysis on sub-culture. We already have enough songs about objectifying women.
Even as a man, I can't hate the "all-men-are-trash" crowd, because what are we doing to root out and shame our fellow men that are dragging our reputation through the mud? If you aren't vocal about denouncing the worst members of your own group, how can you be surprised to be lumped in with them?
It's one thing to give a nuanced view on how impoverished life can lead to criminality as a means of survival, or how culture is used as a weapon against the community to further drive criminality, but songs about robbery and murder help no one but a culture vulture artist.
For instance, as a black male, obviously we have a stereotype of criminality. Laying down my arms for a minute, how does it help supporting members of our community like rap artists that glorify criminal behavior, misogynism, etc. Why would an uncultured and sheltered person not get the wrong idea?
I always think about any prejudices I might have, and I was thinking about how other minorities or oppressed groups might address stereotypes about themselves, which is when I realized this conversation isn't really ever had publicly PRECEDING discourse, which maybe doesn't help public sentiment.
