…It's a 180-degree turn from Project 2025, which mapped out a fairly traditional conservative action plan, including greater burden-sharing and more European responsibility for its own neighborhood. The plan to disrupt and dismantle democracy is now global - and Europe is a primary target.
8) Last point: if what happened at the #MSC is any indication, then Vance is following Musk’s lead in foreign policy. His attacks on Europe (“the enemy within”) and support for Germany's far-right AFD took a sledgehammer to the transatlantic relationship and NATO.
7) A key question moving forward is whether this coalition can/will hold and - if so - whether Musk’s vision or that of the original MAGA-coalition will dominate.
…Instead, Musk slashed the entire agency - eliminating it as a critical tool for those who want a global ideological takeover.
6) But these strategies conflict - take USAID: Project 2025 planned an ideological takeover of the agency, transforming it into a global platform for “traditional” family values, a pro-life and pro-fossil fuel agenda and a way to pressure international partners to move away from Chinese investment.
5) Musk’s vision is DESTRUCTIVE: he wants to disrupt and decimate the federal government, going far beyond deregulation. The goal is self-enrichment with government contracts, the elimination of cumbersome investigative and regulatory bodies, and a chance to put government data at the service of AI.
…and over Democratic-led states (threatening to withhold FEMA funds from California and suing NY over immigration policies).
4) MAGA's vision is CONSTRUCTIVE: a right-wing ideological takeover via a drastic expansion of executive power over fed departments and agencies (firing critical voices, IGs), over other branches of government (challenging Congress’ power of the purse and threatening not to follow court orders)...
3) And then there are Musk and the tech billionaires, out to disrupt it all, arguably without a clear vision of what comes next.
2) Behind him is the ideological #MAGA coalition that formulated Project 2025, made up Christian nationalists (Russel Vought), nativists (Stephen Miller), America Firsters (Vance), but also corporate (especially fossil fuel) interests, and some former neo-cons.
1) It’s helpful to map the power centers in the Trump coalition to understand the different strategies that are playing out. There is Trump himself, out to enrich himself, ensure his own impunity, pursue retribution, repress critical voices, and consolidate power.
ICYMI, a few key points from the discussion - with the caveat that we are all trying to make sense of what is happening at an incredible speed. These are initial thoughts.
