A child should not stand where destruction speaks louder than play. Civilians are not a target.
Instead of playing or learning, countless children caught in armed conflict are forced to watch their kindergartens, schools, and homes come under attack, losing everything familiar to them.
No child deserves to grow up in such conditions, and no parent should ever have to witness it.
🤖 As AI begins to shape decisions on who is detained and how facilities are managed, questions once reserved for science fiction have become urgent matters of law and ethics.
Can technology optimize detention without erasing what makes it humane?

We have started a multi-phase operation to facilitate the release and transfer of hostages and detainees as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The complex operation, which takes place at the request of the parties, is crucial to reuniting separated families. The ICRC’s role in this operation is that of a neutral intermediary, and is strictly humanitarian. The parties to the conflict determined the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including the individuals to be released and the timeline; the ICRC was not involved in the negotiations. It is the responsibility of the parties to the agreement to ensure these operations are conducted safely and with dignity.

Prohibiting arms transfers where the latter risk of being misused for such nefarious purposes must be upheld. The influx of weapons exacts an unacceptable human toll among civilians. It jeopardizes the prospects of lasting peace in contexts such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Israel and the occupied territories, Myanmar, the Sahel, or Somalia, to mention but a few.”

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic killing of our colleague, Ziyad El Toum. Ziyad, 46, was killed near his home in Khan Younis in Gaza around 04 July 2025, while attempting, along with his relatives, to reach and assist an injured family member. Tragically, Ziyad and his relatives did not survive. Ziyad’s killing is a devastating loss for his family and friends and our entire team. We extend our deepest condolences to Ziyad’s wife, extended family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

#IHL isn't just about the battlefield—it’s also about long-term work behind the scenes. At the Advisory Service on IHL @icrc.org, we help build a global net of protection through treaties, national laws, and practical measures. Explore how this happens around the world: www.icrc.org/en/report/re...
On this day in 1859, the Battle of Solferino (Italy) changed the course of history. Amidst the chaos and suffering, a Swiss businessman named Henry Dunant (ICRC’s co-founder) witnessed the horrors of war, and chose compassion over indifference. Today, the legacy of Solferino lives on in the principles of international humanitarian law and the work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
On June 24th 1859, Henry Dunant witnessed the horrors of the Battle of Solferino.
This inspired him to propose a treaty for armies to care for wounded soldiers & create national societies to support military medical services. In 1863, he co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross 👇🏽

Civilians must be protected and respected. Without excuse.
All parties involved in armed conflicts, whether it is a non-state armed group or a state, must protect civilians and civilian objects without excuses.
Civilians shouldn't bear the cost of the hostilities.
