Terms for traffic engineers / planners to stop using:
1) Referring to projects as “improvements”.
That’s like, your opinion, man. Improvement is subjective & is dismissive of people with concerns.
Use more neutral language like “project” or “change”.

Great coverage from reporter Katie Lauer on Walnut Creek’s Treat Blvd protected bikeway, coming in 2026.
Especially for interviewing & highlighting the story of local advocate Cara who was hit there while bike commuting to work a week before the project approval vote.
I was just coming to write this. And there’s plenty of space to make that bike lane better and extend it north of treat on N. Main St.

The new Iron Horse Trail bike/walk bridge across Bollinger Canyon Rd in San Ramon is now open! Check out the bike-through timelapse below & sign up for @bikeeastbay.bsky.social’s Bridging the Bay campaign below to learn about more East Bay bike bridge projects!

Utrecht has finalised plans for a new cycle route around the north of its city centre — a bypass for what’s now the busiest bikeway in the Netherlands.
I explore the background, history, local concerns, and the city’s next steps in my latest blog post/video.
NEW Bike East Bay merch is live!
We just added a ton of new styles and colors to our online shop, from Beautiful Machine crewnecks, to Radical Bike Lobby tie-dye tees, to Bike East Baby onesies.
This may be a limited release so grab your merch while it's available: www.bonfire.com/store/bike-e...
I’d rather the shade of the old style.
I'm leading an early morning bike ride w @bikeeastbay.bsky.social on Saturday July 19 starting 8:30am from Dublin/Pleasanton BART to the grand opening of a new bike/walk bridge in San Ramon. Details & RSVP at the link below if you want to come along!

Congrats on the quotes!
I’m the @sfchronicle.com’s all-time leader of taking public transit to get a better sandwich in the neighborhoods.
Thanks for the ride to West Portal @sfmta.bsky.social!

NYC will potentially be moving from a mayor who compared DOT employees trying to improve the city to drowning rats (seriously) to a candidate running on promises of pedestrianized streets and free buses by defeating the guy who drove transit savior Andy Byford off the continent.
Very satisfying.
Crissy Field for a Golden Gate Bridge photo, but if you only have a day, I recommend avoiding the time-consuming trek up to the bridge itself. You might enjoy a walk along the Embarcadero by the Ferry Building, or I’d recommend you just pick a neighborhood, which is where all the real action is.
If traffic signals are so important for safe interactions between bike riders & pedestrians then why don’t we have them at multi use trail junctions? Reality is that hugely expensive infrastructure is only necessitated b/c of cars, also increasing the cost of bike/walk projects.
This week the cities of Danville, San Ramon, & Dublin ticketed dozens of "unsafe" youth ebike riders in a crackdown effort. Meanwhile, these cities have each built zero protected bikeway projects to date, ten years after they were legalized in California.

Another turn of the crank
you are still climbing this hill
draw deeply from the well
of your strength
as there’s euphoria in effort
as there is grace in toil
there is power in rest
One of S.F.’s busiest streets is on track for a makeover — after years of pushback. Glad this is going to SFMTA Board this Tuesday.

As highlighted in our Transit Saves campaign, if it weren’t for BART, we’d have to plant a forest the size of San Francisco every 2 years to offset the CO2 that would be generated from increased vehicle emissions. The people of the Bay Area need BART. So do the plants and animals that reside here.
A series of collages I made for @bart.gov that highlight the transit system's role in connecting riders with the Bay Area's rich local history, unique geography and nature that can be found within steps from its stations.
Even a 90% cut in service (9pm closure, one-hour frequencies, and running only three of the five BART lines) would close less than half of the FY27 $376 million deficit.
For example, when BART closed at 9pm and reduced frequencies during the height of the pandemic, it represented a 40% cut in service, but it only reduced operating costs by 12%.
And bareheaded to boot!
I'm just going to leave these here.
Congrats!
@bart.gov Why have trains been going slowly between Balboa Park and Daly City the past few weeks? Is there an issue with the trackway or power system?
While I’m certainly looking forward to the road being car-free, it would’ve been interesting, had they kept the existing width, to install raised concrete islands for a two-way bikeway on the ocean side.
The campaign for decision makers & media to use “crash” instead of “accident” has had some success. But how do we similarly encourage planners & engineers to stop reflexively calling projects “improvements”?
Really bad take from where I sit (behind the wheel of a bus) because so much of the skill of an operator relies on human skills like intuiting the intentions of other humans. A surprising fraction of my work is reading faces, body language and gestures.
Have you checked out Kagi? It’s paid, but the results are great and there are no ads/tracking.
Upright and bareheaded… just as nature intended! 👌🏼
