When I went to college I could always tell who was raised super strict and sheltered. They had no skills to spot a problem or problematic people. My Daddy used to say “I can’t teach my daughters to spot the snakes in the grass if I don’t let them go out in the yard.”

It's literally a "you know better, you do better" type of situation. Applying today's understanding around harm and impact to yesterday's standards is a fool's errand IMO.

Many of grandparents and elders where in "relationships" that would absolutely be illegal and cause for concern today.
