And if you're looking for free audio clips to use for your videos, check out the BBC sound effects archive sound-effects.bbcrewind.co.uk and the YouTube audio library studio.youtube.com/channel/UCE1...
Audio editing! I almost exclusively use Audacity - it's simple to use and it's free. What more could you want? www.audacityteam.org
Let's cover live streaming. Though it's not as popular as it was a few years ago, it's still a thing. Simple live streaming can be done directly from many of the platforms (like Instagram Live or YouTube Live). For more flashy live streaming, look into OBS with stream keys! obsproject.com
3D digitisation is still a thing! The best person to follow is Thomas Flynn, who's a sector expert on 3D and has a lot of useful tutorials on his Substack nebulousflynn.substack.com/s/spatial-he.... Love me a bit of 3D.
'Simple interactives!' I hear you shout. John Sear has you covered www.johnsear.com. You can do amazing stuff with WordPress and PowerPoint / Google Slides these days - always worth a play. I did a Google Slides interactive tutorial back in the day, which I think still works youtu.be/bNRHSKwKwe0?...
What about newsletters? There's platforms like MailChimp or DotDigital which are decent (DotDigital is at least) but they're paid for. There's good free options now which combine blogging with newsletters, like Substack, Ghost or Button Down. I use Substack digitalthings.substack.com/p/issue-105-...
And if you need some free images to edit / add to your creations, check out Unsplash! Though always look out for the licencing for each image you download unsplash.com
Canva is great for quick and dirty image editing (like adding text to images, cropping or changing contrast), particularly on mobile. But if you're looking for something more powerful, which won't be limited, then check out the unfortunately named GIMP www.gimp.org
Next up is image editing! I almost exclusively use Pixlr Express, which is free to create 3 images a day. It's a scaled down version of PhotoShop, but it does offer more technical solutions through the beefier Pixlr Editor. pixlr.com/express/
For free on mobile video editing, you can't beat TikTok or Instagram - just download your video onto your phone after you've edited it! Then you can post it wherever. You could also use Canva for simple mobile editing www.canva.com/video-editor/
If you're on Mac, stick with Movie Maker. But if you're on PC or Mac and you're looking for something a bit meatier, Wondershare Filmora (the new HitFilm Express) is still a good free option. filmora.wondershare.net
First up, video editing. I personally use ClipChamp for all of my on PC / Laptop video editing. It's free from Microsoft (basically their updated version of MovieMaker. clipchamp.com/en/
Thought I'd kick off my Bluesky posting by recreating one of my more popular threads from Twitter, sharing top-tips from a talk I did at the @mandhshow.bsky.social back in 2018 on free / cheap tools to help you with your in-house digital work. #MandHShow #MuseTech
I used to be fairly active on the hell-site but have been mostly lurking there for the last year or so. Figured I'd come on over to Bluesky and see what the crack is. Follow me for posts about digital in the arts and culture sector. I promise I'll try really hard to probably post here occasionally.
I'm not generally a 'poetry person', but this - 'Boots' by Rudyard Kipling, read by Taylor Holmes - is pretty powerful: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9RY...
(It's currently featuring in the trailer to '28 Years Later' www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcvL...; h/t @alec-c-ward.bsky.social)
