This is how the process works - I talk to my characters, and eventually they start talking back.
Thatās when the magic happens.

āYeah,ā Rei said, beaming. āThe T. Rex isnāt having much luck. I was thinking Iād have him switch it up and go after a parasaurolophus.ā
His father stepped into the den and pulled out a brightly wrapped package from behind his back.

His parents stood in the denās entrance, his father holding one arm behind his back, his mother rocking little eight-month-old Emily on her hip. āQuite the battle you have going on there, huh, Buddy?ā his father asked.

Whatās the difference between science fiction and science fantasy? š¤āØ
One follows the laws of physics.
The other follows the laws of the story.
What do you think?

The triceratops' three horns kept stabbing with surgical precision. The T. Rex normally hunted juveniles or sick adults. A healthy adult Triceratops was not an easy meal.
Reiās war of the titans was interrupted by footsteps.
Can you guess what it coming?

The T. Rex wasnāt having much success. The ankylosaurus was basically a living tank and all the T. Rex managed was rattling its teeth trying to bite through armor. It didnāt fare much better against the triceratops.
Are you getting a sense of who Rei is?

Once Ruth tried to vacuum near them. Rei burst into tears, sure she'd created an extinction event. That dayās diorama staged a fight to the death between a T. Rex and 2 herbivores: an ankylosaurus and a triceratops.

He had taken over the den with elaborate dioramas. He called them setups and had a fit if anyone moved anything. He had religiously memorized the position of every dinosaur, tree & plastic boulder, down to the millimeter.
What helps you connect with Rei?

Hi, I'm Michael Brachman! šš
I hold a Ph.D. in Sensory Science and Iāve spent years channeling that background into writing hard #sciencefiction - 14 books so far!
I write stories so scientifically grounded that they feel less like fiction and more like a preview of the future. #booksky
Your point is well taken and I agree that accuracy matters. For me, the goal is to make the writing clear enough that readers stay immersed without needing a dictionary. Flow is everything.
She didnāt start walking until fifteen months, wobbly the whole time. By eighteen months she finally steadied, just before they would have taken her for evaluation. Rei liked playing with Emily, but he loved his dinosaurs.
Enjoying these snippets?

How do you know what grade level youāre actually writing at? š¤
Itās not about sounding smarter - itās about being understood. The best writing meets your reader where they are.
Clear > complicated. Every time. āļø

She was sweet as could be but just not motivated to practice her motor skills. She wasnāt even pulling herself upright until her first birthday. Instead of crawling, she did what her parents called āthe worm.ā She wiggled around on the floor to get around

Some nights, Ruth would find herself watching Emily sleep, counting each rise and fall of her tiny chest like a prayer she never admitted to making.
As fast as Rei had developed, Emily was so much slower. They all just called her a late bloomer. Sweet tho

Rei adjusted his grip to be careful. Edward put his arm around his wife, holding her tight, watching their two children cuddle. The contrast was striking. Rei seemed so robust compared to Emily. Ruth had asked their pediatrician about it several times.

Rei promised to be super careful. He was surprised at how light she was. The blanket outweighed her. The warmth of her body seeped through the cotton. He was so fascinated that for a moment he forgot to breathe. He saw how small her fingers were.

They called them āspecial friesā and Emily loved them. Go figure. The first time Rei got to hold his baby sister was quite an event. Ruth hesitated before handing Emily over to him, her voice carrying just a hint of concern. She was delicate.

Emily Bierak was born on January 7, 2047, at Lankenau Hospital. She was a tiny thing, just under six pounds and 18 inches long. Her cries were always sharp but brief, as if she had something important to say but hadnāt figured out the words yet.
