New Field Dispatch | Days 11-12 of Appalachian Spring 2026
The Rattler, the Dragon Slayer, and some of the emptiest roads of the entire trip. Heading home — but not rushing it.

Day 9: Wheels Through Time museum.
Day 10: Newfound Gap at dawn, elk, Laurel Creek, Cades Cove, Foothills Parkway, Happy Valley Road, and one last Dragon.
A fitting close to the Smokies.

Field Dispatch for Days 5 and 6 of Appalachian Spring is live.
You all told me to ride Wayah Road. You were right. Tight, technical, demanding — rode it three times before I was satisfied.
Then, the Cherohala Skyway, 40+ miles all to myself.

Nothing like a roadside BBQ truck…in Tellico Plains, TN
Nice! I did take the parkway west from Asheville for about an hour or so. It was gorgeous!
Appalachian Spring Field Dispatch - Days 3 & 4
Stunning VA backroads, The Snake, the Blue Ridge Parkway, a fellow rider and map on a wall that changed the whole afternoon.
Days like this are why I ride.

My Appalachian Spring 2026 road trip is underway.
Field Dispatch | Days 1-2
Two days south on the highway, one weird moment in Pennsylvania, and I-81 collecting on an old debt.

A stranger at #Canyonlands asked a simple question.
"Are you taking the quick way, or the beautiful way?"
What followed was more than 121 miles of stunning Utah desert that I almost missed.

There's a road that runs about a mile above the LA Basin. The Rim of the World Scenic Byway — wide open along the ridge, then tight twisties down to Silverwood Lake.
New Road Story video up now.

Map of the Smoky Mountains area highlighted.
Looking for the roads that don't make the top-ten lists — the ones locals recommend and tourists miss.
Heading down to the Smokies area next week for quiet roads, beautiful twisties, and some filming.
What roads do you ride when you have nowhere where you need to be?
Help me get lost.

Somewhere south of Mount Rogers, the signal dropped and the road changed names three times. Still made it to the hotel.
A Little Lost in Virginia
Unexpected miles on back roads in November light. Every road is the right road.

The full silent ride on the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway is up.
No narration, no music. No mid-roll ads.
47 Miles in Silence, from WY-120 to Dead Indian Pass to the Beartooth Highway.

Most riders treat the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway as the opening act of the Beartooth Highway.
It's its own amazing road, and they're missing something.
Dead Indian Pass and the history most people ride right past.

Just sharing a picture I took this evening while walking the doggo. I get to live here.

#Gettysburg left me heavy. Old Plank Road lifted me back up.
A cold November day in central Pennsylvania--a battlefield and a bend in a mountain that both changed the course of a country.

Will do...current plan is the weekend of June 13-14th.
Yeah. That's just wrong.
I started playing around with Resolve. So far too complicated for me.
I'm planning a trip up your way in June (NYC → Vermont → Québec → Gaspé → Route 389 → Labrador → Newfoundland → Nova Scotia → PEI → New England → NYC)
BTW: I love your website design. Looking forward to Sunday's videos.

And, if you just want to capture GPS while you're riding, you don't actually need internet access for that. There are phone apps that can capture the GPS coordinates while you ride, even if you don't have Internet/maps.
Happy to help/chat if I can.
The Garmin unit isn't really necessary. I got it because I was going to be riding in places where there isn't cell service, and I wanted to have all the maps I might need.
Using Rever and/or Google Maps on your phone, you can, with a little tinkering, download maps ahead of time.
I generally use Rever for my trip planning, because I like doing that on the bigger screen of my laptop.
On the bike, I use Rever and/or my Garmin Zumo XT2 for Navigation and to create GPX files of my rides.
Then, I use TravelBoast to make the animated movie maps in my videos.
Super comfortable. I barely know I'm wearing it. I have back armor in my jacket, so I took it out of the vest.
I have the electronic version, so I have to charge it. Which is fine for me--a full charge has lasted me well over 9 hours of riding time.
Replacement cartridges are expensive, though.
The Beartooth Highway - #MilesInSilence
72 minutes. No narration. No music. Just the road. 4K.

Best experienced full screen, with the volume up.
Enjoy the ride. Unhurried and uniterrupted.

I do. I ride with a Helite E-Turtle2. I got it a few years ago, and I do like it. I do wish I had gotten the High-Vis version, though.
Yep Beartooth. And the video is live now.

Love it seeing the videos in-process.
What's a US road you two have wanted to check out?
If I've ridden it and have good video of it, I'll try to do that one next.
The Beartooth Highway had been on my bucket list for 25 years.
When I finally rode the Beartooth, it delivered everything I'd been hoping for, and a few things I wasn't expecting.
