The Freedom of Information Act and the offices which provide information requests are fundamental to a Free Press in America and the only check the people have on the government.

Thanks for sharing. I was unaware of this, very concerning. It makes the very audible noise in the Virginia community extra disturbing. I am guessing @ 50-70 decibels unrelenting 24 hrs a day. These are env'l & human health time bombs being thrust upon unsuspecting communities. Resistance is urgent.

For the history of #capitalism folks, an alternative model.

Add the negative physical and mental impact of constant noise pollution to the health impact on local communities by data centers. These decibals are too high. Local ordinances need to be adjusted everywhere to prevent this assault on the ears which can cause depression, anxiety, and sleep loss.

This is a separate lawsuit from the earlier one I have posted about. Keep your eye open for when claims can be made.

This is a start. Putting the breaks on data centers is necessary to consider the huge local environmental impact. We need more time to convince educators of the deleterious impact of casual use of generative software systems in schools.

Historian here, live in Switzerland. Did a quick search for 'deutsche alte schrift' and this W does appear in normal handwriting in earlier periods & in some regions. I would not draw a conclusion about it being racist unless there was evidence that it was deliberate and not based on tradition.

This is a subtweet:

It is silly and unhelpful to lump (1) the guy throwing a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's house, (2) community activists fighting data center placement, and (3) artists defending their intellectual property under a single, overarching banner of "AI populism."

Don't do that.

Why does cheating matter? A personal anecdote and an appeal to junior colleagues.

"Often you not only are the product — yes, they will steal & sell your data — but you are also robbed of learning. When the hype inevitably dies down, as it has done many times before, through AI summers & winters …, you want to have skills. You want to have a degree that matters."— @olivia.science

"The conservative caricature of college campuses as liberal indoctrination camps persists because it is useful cover... American higher education is facing down a process of authoritarian capture that threatens the long-term viability of our system of higher education."

“check out this great interview w/a.o. @olivia.science & @irisvanrooij.bsky.social (…) The whole piece is strong, but the beginning is truly fantastic, when Guest explains how the Q of whether something might work is completely irrelevant ("possibilities don't bake bread”).” — @felienne.bsky.social

In other words, AI is playing the children's game of telephone but calling it 'intelligence.'

So the ai industry has rolled out products admittedly performing at a B-/C+ level, for students to rely on. I think there is an equation for estimating the degeneration which will naturally occur among the student population relying on mediocre overviews of information, documents, & essays.

An interesting read on the impact of ai interaction and "outsourcing judgement."

An interesting read. Is it still a sweatshop if you like your work but the rest of these conditions apply? What about academia? Many are overworked, underpaid, and disrespected, especially the exploitation of adjuncts.
