My GP mentioned it before I turned 50 but after 45.

With sorrow, we announce the passing of FOBAZI M. ETTARH 1989 - 2026. Fobazi changed so many lives with her friendship, love, and brilliance. She was so loved, and leaves behind a powerful legacy. We thank Fobazi's community for their support over the last several months of her illness. A private burial will be held for family. We will be in touch with further information about a future Celebration of Life event, as well as ways to support Fobazi's family and legacy.
Parents are responsible for their children’s reading choices. The public library is NOT responsible for your child’s reading choices.
Defunding libraries creates a recreational, intellectual, and social vacuum in local communities.
Which dye did you use? I like the color.

Food banks need money if you’ve got it. For everything else, contact them and ask—some can take donated meat by hunters or eggs from backyard flocks, some can’t.
As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read.
They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

Ad for B&N preorder sale. "Discounts starting at 25% off for B&N rewards members. Now - July 11." Includes an image of Slayers of Old, by Jim C. Hines, which I'm told is an excellent choice for preordering.
B&N is doing one of their preorder sales for members. Just in case there was *something* you were thinking about ordering… 😇
Also, @bookshop.org is offering Free Shipping for the next 79 hours as part of their Anti-Prime sale.
It's time for new offerings for your bookshelf gods!
my hottest educational take is that schools should actively, non-punitively teach students how to admit when they don't know something, aren't sure or have made a mistake, with various teaching frameworks adapted to support this ideal, because people who can't admit fault are breaking the world
the world is just better with trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer people in it

Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.
🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees:
Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and…
1. Download your NSF award letters.
2. Print PDF your annual reports.
3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports.
NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse
The great thing about fighting back against this stuff is that if you end up losing anyway you get the same outcome you’d have gotten from complying but you don’t have to fucking hate yourself too.
Just listened to this. It's good.(I mean the podcast always is but this one landed today).
Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines.
When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.
