As a Catholic in the Bible Belt, it initially befuddled me and then *consistently* infuriated me about my evangelical neighbors was a foundational concept for them: professed belief in Jesus=saved=good person➡️what they did was good (even when it wasn't).

Never let anyone tell you this was unforeseeable. I was a teenager when DHS was created and I remember the memes (though we didn’t call them that yet) about “homeland security” being a Nazi term. Plenty of people knew at the time that DHS was a bad, dangerous, and unamerican idea.
YES. In high school a libertarian classmate and I agreed on 1 thing only and it was that DHS was some nationalist bs that would violate human rights. People *absolutely* knew back then.
Sometimes you look at Democrats and think "You've spent so long accepting lesser evils that you don't even consider anymore if you have to accept an evil at all."
