Some practical advice on fighting misinformation here:
Instead of correcting ("There is no evidence that aluminium in vaccines causes bone problems")...
...try a positive, indirect rebuttal ("the aluminium in vaccines makes vaccines more effective at preventing disease").

Nice to see my byline in InDaily for the first time (outside the letters section)!
This is the first taste of a content-sharing deal with Murray Bridge News, thanks to our mutual friends at @lina.org.au.
"Listening to your audience will help you present options they actually want, and build a relationship with loyal customers who will come back to your restaurant because they trust you to curate a menu that is good for them."
"You can combine healthy options that are good for them with yummy treats that might have too many calories but put a smile on people’s faces. Setting the menu is your responsibility, and your privilege."
"Think of your journalism organization as a restaurant. People can’t just walk in and ask for whatever they want to eat. You are in charge of the menu — which you can change, but not too often or your customers won’t know what you’re about anymore."
An interesting take from the International Journalism Network on how to balance audience feedback and wishes with producing responsible, public interest journalism.

This is exciting (to me, an independent local news publisher)!
For the first time I'm aware of, @lionpubs.bsky.social have revealed some of the KPIs they include in their sustainability audits for newsrooms, their keys to:
🗂️ Operational resilience
💰 Financial health
📰 Journalistic impact

LINA spent last week in Canberra and will continue working with the government to support local and independent new publications that are strengthening Australian communities by providing public interest journalism and facilitating community connection and civic engagement.
This delay will only heighten the urgent need for the News Media Assistance Program (News MAP), a $153 million investment into the Australian news industry which LINA hopes to see rolled out in July.
The bargaining incentive was devised following a social media inquiry in response to Meta's withdrawal from deals made under the News Media Bargaining Code in April 2024.
The new big tech levy was announced in late 2024 as a mechanism to compensate Australian publishers for advertising lost to global digital platforms, which has had significant impacts on the diversity and quality of Australia's news media over the past two decades.

Did you know 56% of LINA publications are led by women?! Once again these 'green shoot' newsrooms are bucking the trends of the media industry. Meet three who are working to provide quality public interest journalism to their communities in different corners of Australia:

We also had productive conversations with the Department of Communications and Department of Finance, on topics such as reaching engaged and diverse audiences through government advertising with independent newsrooms.
Public interest journalism and local news is so important for not only civic engagement, but also social cohesion, community connection, and access to critical information during emergencies.
LINA is working to see this value reflected in the policy decisions now and into the future.
