Conferences are an invaluable opportunity for our Curators to share the Museum’s work, and make connections with the natural and human history of other parts of the world.

Hand painted by local artist Rei Weibe, owner of Easy Art Club, these beautiful mini canvas magnets capture the beautiful Manitoba skies during the northern lights, shining down over the silhouette of a polar bear.

“It’s a bee!” “It’s a wasp!” No… it’s a hoverfly! Flies in the family Syrphidae, or “hoverflies”, are well known their ability to hover and their black and yellow colouration. While they cannot sting, they mimic bees and wasps with their bold colours, which can be enough to scare predators away!

We are grateful for the partnership of the communities and members of Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation, Fisher River Cree Nation, and McBeth Fisheries that facilitated the collecting of these fossils.

Robert Mann, a veteran of WWI and a member of the Canadian Legion delegation, participated in the Vimy Ridge Pilgrimage in Vimy, France in 1936, and wore this identifying badge as part of that trip. #VimyRidgeDay

The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place from April 9-12, 1917. Using new and imaginative tactics, Canadian soldiers accomplished in three days what others had failed to do in three years. The victory was costly: the Canadian military suffered over 10,000 casualties, including 3,598 dead.

The Criddle family, who came to Manitoba in 1882, were famous naturalists. Many items that they collected or created were donated to the Manitoba Museum, including the above watercolour by Norman Criddle, the Manitoba Government’s first official Provincial Entomologist.

A watercolour painting of a cutting of a plant with small dark green serrated leaves, and three larger five-petaled pink flowers with yellow centres. Several flower buds grow in small clusters from the stems which have prickles growing along all surfaces. To the lower left of the cutting is an illustration of a stem with three round red fruits at the ends. Between the two illustrations handwriting reads “N.C. / 17.VI.06”.

None of the wild roses in Manitoba actually have thorns. They do however, possess prickles. Prickles are epidermal protrusions that are similar to very stiff hairs. Thorns, in contrast, are woody structures that are actually modified branches. #WildflowerWednesday

This 2-metre-long snow snake is used to play a traditional Iroquois winter game. The aim of the game is to slide the "snake" along the snow for as long a distance as possible, often along tracks made by pulling a log or even a small child in the snow. #IDSDP2026
