The budget language calls for fining a school district that "experiences a student walkout" and fails to obtain written parental consent for each student who leaves a school building.
Districts would be fined if they fail to enforce school attendance laws and policies associated with disciplinary actions for absent students.
They also could face penalties if their staff encourage, facilitate or enable a walkout.
The fine would be equal to the contract base salary of the superintendent of the offending district for each school day the walkout occurs. It only applies to public schools.

Seems bad.

Townships are the most local form of Kansas government. But can they survive? From muddy roads to petty politics, township posts can be messy: Candidates for forlorn local boards in short supply.

Not a huge effect (half a point among Republicans, a point among Democrats), but interesting anyway. Again, both races are uncontested, so people are making the choice to vote for one but not the other. Co-authors are Alex Middlewood and one of our undergrads, David Hernandez.

Presenting at the Great Plains PS Assn conference tomorrow. We looked at uncontested partisan precinct committeeman/woman races in Kansas, and noticed that the men on average did better than the women with Republicans, opposite for Democrats. Holds when you control for gender makeup of voters.

The second chart reminds me of discussions in my American government classes about the Electoral College and the Senate. A common defense of their disproportionate representation is that it protects rural voters from urban voters, but a majority of rural residents live in the 15 biggest states!

It’s interesting to click through to the data he’s citing - they say reading and science scores have been stable long term, it’s specifically math scores that are on the decline. Which isn’t good, but it doesn’t match some of these claims he’s making as to what kids these days can’t do
