The motion of both sides towards opposite ends inevitably creates forces that shift the centrist one way or another. Whether they go to the right or the left has much to do with the degree of development of their class consciousness, their class, their perception of their own social status, etc.

The reason centrists subscribe to the "Horseshoe Theory" is that, while the left tries to move humanity forward and the right tries to move it backward, centrists want humanity to stay right where it is. They see the two ends as the same because both are in motion of some kind.
