it is, among other things, incredibly striking to see that roberts was so solicitous of the burden the clean power plan might put on fossil fuel executives, when, a decade later, he is indifferent to the way trump’s moves have thrown hundreds of thousands of lives into turmoil.
"The University of California system, the California State system, the City University of New York — these are the institutions actually educating America’s workforce, actually moving first-generation students into the middle class, actually delivering on higher education’s democratic promise."
Absolutely true. www.scotusblog.com/2025/07/whos...
"Even as they debated the Obama plan’s possible burden on the power industry, in the entire chain of correspondence obtained by The Times, not a single justice … mentioned the dangers of a warming planet as one of the possible harms the court should consider.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...
Roy just claims that Congress is not responsible for deciding how to spend money. That is an extraordinary position to take. Embarrassing to his own institution, and a complete defiance of the clear terms of the Constitution.
Exactly 💯

“lots of lessons here for the US - in particular that Magyar went to Orban strongholds for years and persuaded Orban supporters in person that their lives could be better. He knew he had the cities -- and he needed the villages to win this sort of victory.
I've studied so many concentration camps through history that held vulnerable people in just this kind of crowded squalor. You demonize people, you demand more arrests, this is what you get. It already has its own budget and its own momentum, and is on track to go much further, unless we stop it.
Here is Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky/@schakowsky.house.gov's official statement, calling on Congress to impeach Trump:
It would be nice if someone in power would protect us from him.

Ex-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene R-GA now calling for President Trump to be removed from office
Right now, the President is escalating a war of choice with reckless rhetoric and no clear objective—just chaos and risk for our troops.
Republicans must find the courage to join us in ending this before more Americans are put in harm’s way.
Every single Democrat in the House needs to sign on to this and anyone running for Congress needs to support it as well:
@repyassansari.bsky.social will introduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth next week for "repeatedly violating his oath of office and his duty to the Constitution."
This is the most horrifying, psychotic, grotesque message Trump has ever posted—openly threatening to commit genocide. This is beyond reckless. It’s dangerous, dehumanizing, and utterly unfit for any leader.

Brian Beutler @brianbeutler.bsky.social has a good argument for this:
"With the House of Representatives back in session this morning, I think Hakeem Jeffries should force a vote on a privileged resolution to impeach Donald Trump as a first order of business."

The president is openly threatening extraordinary war crimes, in a war he started without congressional approval — and without either justification or strategy.
All Americans should be demanding:
Impeach him. Remove him. He is lawless and dangerous man.
We habituated ourselves to the reasonable expectation that Republicans would insulate Trump from meaningful accountability, and gave up even trying to stop them. But that is a decision all of us, particularly Dems, can revisit, starting this morning. www.offmessage.net/p/impeachmen...
It is absolute demagoguery to say that a foreign student took anyone's spot. Foreign students have enriched and, bluntly, funded U.S. universities. Those universities will be less successful and less desirable as a result of this rank protectionism.
So, thing that is apparently better understood inside academia than outside of it:
International students pay sticker price. Most domestic students do not. International students are subsidizing the education costs for domestic students, as per student governmental funding drops.
When I was 12, my mom and I were talking about a book with a friend and the friend asked my mom if it was ok for me to read it. I was so surprised because no one had ever told me I couldn’t read a book. Fortunately, my mom was equally surprised. That’s also how I raised my kids.
Call for impeachment, sir. It's important to speak this into existence so people understand how dire it is.

So, we're just not doing that whole Article 1 thing anymore, is that it?
It would be useful if the NYT explicitly stated that the pilot, if captured, would be a POW, that there are laws governing how POWs can be treated, that respect for international law on war shapes how the enemy approaches it, and this is why the US conduct of this illegal war has been so dangerous.
Axios: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's pledge of "no quarter, no mercy for our enemies" violates a bright‑line ban in the laws of war, legal experts say. March 15, 2026
Now that at least one U.S. air crew member is alive on the ground in Iran, it's worth revisiting Pete Hegseth's commitment to "no quarter, no mercy for our enemies."
This is the scenario he was warned about.
Yes and yes!
She was my coclerk and she is indeed AWESOME!
Sherrilyn Ifill & ACLU lawyer Cecillia Wang hug outside the Supreme Court after Wang argued the case against Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship
3 kids hold red signs saying “Protect Birthright citizenship” and the 14th Amendment speaks for itself.” A crowd stands behind them in front of the Supreme Court.
We couldn’t have hoped for a better advocate than @aclu.org National Director Cecillia Wang today in the SCOTUS, arguing against Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship. If there’s any fairness left, this wil be a big win for democracy, citizenship, & the integrity of the 14th Amendment.
