Former 154 titlist Tim Tszyu returns with a vengeance, destroys Spencer in rd 4, shakes off back-to-back defeats & sets up likely Keith Thurman showdown. Read my story & sign up for my #boxing newsletter: danrafael.substack.com/p/tim-tszyu-... #TszyuSpencer
Am now so excited for this
If you ask me it’s good for the soul and some beautifully documented chapters of the human experience.
I digress. Read the book. Watch the fights. Thanks all if you read this.
I could go on. Bert Sugar takes boxing writing and elevates it past simple record keeping. He brings it to the realm of poetry. How you feel in the theater hearing Hermia, Helena, Lysander, and Demetrius confess their love in silky smooth iambic pentameter
“No label is adequate, he was boxings version of rashoman”
“When all the true technicians of the ring disappeared, a little necromancer lifted himself to the plane of men called ‘the greatest pound-for-pound something or other’”
“Fighting like he was sir’d by a dam’d typhoon”
But my god Bert Sugar you glorious bastard. The way this man rights puts Shakespeare to shame. I often say in my posts “how can you not be romantic about boxing”. A stolen quote I’ve adjusted from the money hall quote about baseball for my own purposes. Bert takes it further
Had ever accomplished the feat before (excluding the ‘halfway house junior titles’ as Bert so poetically puts it).
men who were poets in the ring. If you haven’t watched jofre fight anyone & you haven’t seen Harada destroy then 112 pound champ Kingpetch correct that immediately
Harada. A miniature hurricane. Throwing blows from 1,000 angles. Powerful legs allowing him to change the elevation of his assaults at will. Endless gas tank. The only man who ever ended up defeating the mighty Jofre. And nearly getting 3 titles when only Armstrong and fitzimmons
They have a story I’ve been familiar with for a long time, but one I’ve never taken the time to really soak up, read about in depth and watch.
Talk about two unbelievable fighters. Jofre. wirey framed bomber who detonators unbelievable punches with pin point puncher precision.
The wife’s been giving me 2-3 numbers between 1 and 100 to decide who I read about next.
So far Freddie welsh (48), Harry Greb (3), Tommy Ryan (24), Willie Pep (12), Charley Burley (64)
But two stuck out on this particular reread. Eder Jofre (26) & Fighting Harada (87)
Up north with the wife and her parents this weekend. Had “grandpa breakfast” of eggs, bacon, dumplings and warm brandy. Sitting around the fire listening to albums I’m reading Bert Sugars 100 greatest boxers of all time (original not revised. need his revised in my collection)
Yes my favorite fighter to watch today. Just such a nice kid and a complete fighter.
I never miss a bam fight!
THE AMAZING BOY pulls it out in the 12th!
Likely behind on the scorecards in a grueling affair with Akui, gets the stoppage after hellacious barrage.
Akui should be so proud. Looked better than he ever has.
Let’s go. The TRILOGY
So keep in mind Nakatani did just EXPLODE cuellar in 3 rounds.
But Nakatani clearly had some problem when he can’t do his thing. If you can bully him at all. He HAS to back up like 6 5 feet and try again
That being said I don’t know who beats him aside from inoue.
FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK…
The THREE best fights in the hes twitchy division are:
1) Usyk vs Kabayel (WBC, WBA, WBO)
2) Dubois vs Parker (IBF)
3) winner vs winner (Undisputed)
Shakur is so talented, but has brittle hands and no killer instinct
Worst. Episode. EVER.
Fighters who aren’t living up to the hype?
- Jared anderson
- Xander zayas
Jared is checked out completely.
While Xander is still winning, there just doesn’t seem to be ANYTHING special about him. Not fast, ok power, ok feet, fine but leaky defense, no killer instinct.
Watching the Duarte-Madueno card right now. What a special aspect of boxing. Almost any weekend you’re get to see someone of no renown hug his mother, fist bump a fan, on his way to fight in an arena that can hold thousands. It’s just as special if not more so, when that arena hasn’t filled up yet.
Benvidez threw after the bell first and Morrell responded. Stupidass deduction from the referee, it's that simple.
Sean zittel, boxing commentator and analyst One of the best in the biz in my opinion.
Abel Ramos, he just had a fantastic fight against Mario barrios. He’s also Jesus Ramos uncle.. and here’s a pic of me with Kaipo Gallegos. Who was on the undercard. 7-0-1 prospect
#benavidezmorrell gave the wife and I one hell of a weekend.
Big thank you to all the fighters, and to the boxing community for being such a welcoming and electric group of people!
And to Sean Zittel, thanks for stopping to chat a bit. It looks like you picked the right David!
Just read the unabridged version of Anne’s diary. Years ago I read the “school” version—so much left out about an adolescent’s sexual awakening. I mourn that the world never got to see this brilliant teenager grow up. Never forget. #booksky
Guys, I don’t think David Benavidez has enough head movement to make get out of the way of Morrells shots.
Morrell by wide decision or TKO
